Last Season - This Season - Next Season - Season After
Top half ------ Top 6 ---------Top 4 ---- Title Challenge

Is what i thought was a realistic plan at the start of last season. Other people thought we should aim higher, sooner, but i think a steady improvement is the way to go.

But surely if you aim to finish top 6, you don't limit yourself to signings that are capable of playing in a 5th or 6th place team but no higher.

Or has he agreed as in....Bluemoon says he has?

To be fair next season is our best chance... Season after next we will have the Europa league to deal with... If you wanted to create a tournament to keep the top 4 safe it would be the Europa league.

I agree I think we need to bypass this stupid europa league if we can we have a chance this year we need to grasp it with both hands !

just a thought if we had the special one do you think for one second he would be aiming for fifth or sixth with this squad ?
he would be aiming for top 4 at least and if everyone thinks hughes is the right man surely hughes should be doing the same ?

Depends really, though to be honest i haven't read most of the debate, just the last page. We're already signing players that are good enough to play in a title challenging team, the problem is, you don't just need 11 players good enough, you need an entire squad. If you look at the squads of the top 4 right now, they contain some pretty average players, but they provide versatility and depth.

That said, i think we have players of that level right now - Kompany, Zabaleta and Bellamy spring to mind, good players, not great ones though, they have the desire and attitude to play their part in a club that's competing at the top level, i think. So yes we should be aiming to sign players to play at the top level, and we are, but we need more squad depth as well as better quality in the first team, and a certain type of player, so i think it will take more than this transfer window to achieve that level.

Reading that back it's a bit jumbled but i can't be arsed sorting it out.

I dont rate Toure at this stage hes been poor for a couple of seasons. I think there are much better options out there.

However even I will admit that Toure with his loss of form is a much better player than Dunne or Ben Haim.

Therfore its a step forward even if he ends up as a sub.

Like I said trying to stay positive. Hes better than any central defender we have at the club at the moment except Nedum maybe. Dont say Kompany hes a midfield player at the end of the day and richards is a full back. We need cover in there I will also go on record as saying upson is still a good option as well even at 30. Hes english will fit in easily with the squad and is good enough for a top 6 side anyday of the week. We would get 4 years out of him at least. Just thinking fall back positions. Its a question of who is available and who will come at the end of the day.

why is it we need players NOW. there is at least a five year, if not a ten year plan in place. the only reason we Need players now is to break the top 4 like people think we will do. no need for the added pressure. the aim was top 10 last season, top 6 this year then push for a champions leauge place.

are you tellin me that you would be dissapointed with fith spot. and if so, your as bad as the "new fans" we will end up with.

im only 23 but i have been waiting for a season like next season for about 19 years. but lets not build ourselves up for a fall. solid top 6 next season and i would be delighted. if we break top 4 then MH and the squad need a bloody good pat on the back.

toure would be a great signin. yes i agree there is better about but he is better that TBH and dunnie. hes got premiership experience and plays at the top level season after season. he will definatly take us to the next level. (just to point out to the not-so-clever-few. this is not chapmions). lets enjoy the rest of the transfer window and next season without getting ahead of ourselves and being dissapointed at the fact we didn't live up to the over-hyped expectations

The problem is; yes top 6 would be a 'natural' progression, but we have signed top 4 players, ade,tevez, so its blatantly obvious we are aiming for top 4, which really puts pressure on Hughes to balance up the team by buying top 4 defenders, sadly it means Nedum may suffer. Cant have it both ways, i would like him to be 1st choice next season but is he at that level, and has Hughes got the time to risk it? I doubt it.
Bit of a predicament really........................

i dont care what anyone says toure would improve our defence , he's up there with the best , yeah he was poor for a peiriod but hes now coming back to something like his best , so if this news is true will be good signing imo

If Nedum goes we need to sign 4 central defenders not 3. As Dunne and Ben Haim are DEFINATELY not top 6 players let alone top 4. Kompany is a defenisve midfield player and needed for cover in there (when actually fit) richards is a full back.

We have to calm down and think sensibly. We are sturggling to get a couple of players in there that will improve us; Nedum is our best centre half at the moment loose him its just another player we have to replace I wish people would accept this.

Thing is Alera, CH is probably the most important piece of any top notch side, all the succesful sides have leaders at the back who command and dominate.....thing is they are bloody thin on the ground...[bit like crouch when he falls over]

Senderos>Toure. End of. Senderos could be one of the top 10 defenders in the world in a few years given he gets the playing time and confidence. Toure just has nothing going for him, would be a real poor signing.

I think Kompany is our best Central Defender actually, this is where he played before we put him in Defensive Midfield when we were struggling. He is a fantastic Defender. Easily our best, followed by the ever improving Onouha.

Does anyone feel Onouha could be good as a right back? He certainly has the pace for the wings.
