L.A

Went last year for a week and a bit in Vegas and 4 days in LA. We stayed in the valley near universal studios, miles cheaper and only 15 minutes drive from Hollywood so worth a look.

There are tons of things to do but you'll definitely need a car. We did Malibu, Santa Monica, Griffith Observatory and also had a ride to Disneyland for the day.

If you are looking at flights and have to connect in the US then try to fly into Burbank. It's a tiny airport in the valley with connections all over the US and it's closer to everything and far easier to get out of than the mental LAX airport.

Doing 4 nights in vegas and 4 nights in L.A not planning on getting a car so will probably stay as close to 1 of the main attractions??

South Central is quite interesting.
Just make sure you don't have the wrong tattoos.
Wrong tattoos? Hell, the wrong coloured shirt or jacket can get you into trouble. Red for these 12 square blocks for one of the Bloods sets, Blue for the next neighbourhood over for the Crips. And if keeping track of that is difficult, you'll need to avoid purple too as the Grape Street Crips use that as their colour. And this doesn't include Asian and Hispanic gangs. Better play it safe and just walk around au naturel.

I used to live in Laguna Beach, a lovely area in Orange County. South of LA.
Close by is Newport beach, Balboa Island, San Juan Capistrano.
An area worth exploring. Plenty to see and do.
I returned there a couple of years ago.
Laguna is just as it was in the 80s.

Fuck that. A weekend in Filey sounds much more simple.

I'd certainly have rethink on that. A car is a must, and not too expensive. A road trip to Vegas via Death Valley, is doable in a day, and you could always route through Palmdale and Lancaster (shopping/food). That route also takes you through Ridgecrest (also decent food stops) which is not far from Trona Pinnacles. The pinnacles have featured in a number of Sci-fi movies if you are into that kind of thing.

Depending what time you fly, you are going to be pretty knackered (given its >11hr flight), and you'll want to stay close to the airport first night. Free shuttle busses from the airport to the main hotels nearby (Embassy Suites is pretty good, plus it's a 5 minute walk to the hire car pickup), then shuttle bus back to the airport in the morning then hop on the Avis/Enterprise shuttle from the airport to pick up your hire car. I certainly wouldn't risk getting a hire car as soon as you land.

Yep, Burbank is a great shout - it's a local gem and infinitely easier to get in/out of LA in general

@Gaudion M is right, SF is a nice shout but you're really talking about a lot of driving (minimum 6 hrs, longer if you take the more scenic PCH) and the Bay Area while smaller than LA is still rife with traffic issues

I like the beaches (Both north LA like Malibu or Zuma, more central like Hermosa/Manhattan). Of course, I despise the touristy spots and with LA you will have many choices for that if that interests you. If you rent a convertible, you have to drive through the canyons and Muhlholland

When I lived & schooled in LA, visitors always wanted to go to Universal but I never quite understood the interest since it is pretty poor value with little to remember that you haven't seen online already. And if you're coming from Europe, Europa Park is miles better than either Disneyland or Magic Mountain (Valencia). I always recommend seeing/doing the things you will struggle to elsewhere - beaches & food

If you make it out to Burbank area, recommend Porto's Cuban bakery - crazy lines but everything is great. Fish n Chips, there is a popular spot that is worth a taste in Malibu along PCH. Lots of Iranians too so Persian food is first rate (Raffi's is excellent). Mexican, sooo many choices and at the high end plenty of choices too

Word of caution too, something I always remind people - in LA, even in Beverly Hills, you are never more than a stone's throw from trouble so be aware of your surroundings and potential danger. Because there is so much mobility by car, transient crime happens throughout the LA area at any time of day

Laguna is great but as an example, it's nearly 2 hrs south of central LA with traffic - that's how big LA is
