The film follows closely the narrative and cinematic style of Whiplash (2014) and Black Swan (2010) as the lead actress, Isabelle Furhman plays a college student driven by her fixation on rowing for the varsity team as events slowly spiral in and out of control.

Yet the film also channels similarities with Aronofsky's The Wrestler (2008) as Isabelle Furhman welcomes the suffering and pain of failure rather than the elation of the final victory experienced by both Miles Teller (Whiplash) & Natalie Portman (Black Swan) in justifying their paths towards self destruction.

Plenty of training montages, fast cuts, jarred edits, evocative cinematography and a film heavily steeped in symbolism matched with a fitting soundtrack of impending doom in contrast with velvety smooth ballads.

An impressive debut that draws you into the compelling and frightening world of sports obsession.

8/10
