Last Film You Saw

"The Monkey King".

2 hour film and 1 hour and 40 mins of confusing and poor storytelling. I felt a trick was missed here and although I understand that the director is telling the story from the Chinese perspective(rather than Japanese version like the "Saiyūki"/ "Monkey" series shown on BBC 2 way back when!!), it just didn't translate well as a fantasy martial arts piece. Yen plays 'Sun Wukong' quite well, actually, but it's the messy direction and translating of the story that lets this down badly(not to mention the quick speed of the subtitles for Western audiences!!).

The main thing I was glad of was finally understanding how the 'Handsome Monkey King' came into existence, as my childhood memories were quite sketchy on this part, and a fleeting glimpse of 'Tripitaka' right at the end makes me think there may yet be a sequel of the 'Monkey King' and his penance servitude with the monk, in the future.

But this? Huuugely disappointing, I'm afraid...

When I was working in China a couple of years ago my students told me the whole story. They all know it like we know the Grimm tales.

i watched 'hunger' not for the political connotations but cos it has a scene in it which im sure is pretty unique in film history.

The priest and bobby sands have a dialogue and the whole scene is 1 shot...the acting is unbelievable and the (8 mins i think) scene is unprecedented for a mainstream movie....if youre not into this shit (like me) just do a youtube for the scene on its own...you wont be disappointed

edit excuse me:

The scene is 28 pages long and involves two characters having a conversation, a long conversation: Bobby Sands, Irish prisoner about to go on hunger strike, and Father Dominic Moran, the priest who comes to visit Sands in prison. Bobby Sands is played by Michael Fassbender and Father Dominic is played by Liam Cunningham. The main chunk of dialogue takes up 17 minutes, a back and forth between the two men – and it was decided to do it in one take.

That's an excellent summary and beefs up what I already know.

American history X - unbelievable in parts, but Norton holds it together. Good stuff.
