Last Film You Saw

The Big Sleep - 1946 noir detective story featuring Humphrey Bogart as private eye Philip Marlowe and Lauren Bacall as Vivian Sternwood. A fun watch.

8.5/10
Although the movie is very good, it isn't on the same level as The Maltese Falcon. My (small) gripe with The Big Sleep is that the plot is full of detail and somewhat hard to follow. At several points in the movie I didn't quite understand what precisely was going on, even though the main gist was clear

Watched Caddo Lake last night and really enjoyed it. Very atmospheric. It’s not an easy film to watch and the storyline is challenging in terms of understanding what you’re seeing. Everything comes together though but we are going to rewatch it to try and join all the dots !

Caddo Lake (2024) is essentially the movie version of the German mind-bending TV series Dark (2017)

Human Centipede 1 and 2. First one was crap enough, second one was a pile of shit (literally) think I’ll skip part 3 it sounds even worse.

Speak No Evil - Fairly generic psychological horror, might try the original to compare
From what I can remember, it's been years since I saw them, part 3 is the dirtier, grimier, grottier of the 3, masturbation with sandpaper etc

Evil Under The Sun - An Agatha Christie, "Hercule Poirot" novel with an all-star cast featuring Peter Ustinov as Poirot.

An excellent watch - the cast is fabulous . Over-the-top moments are spot on, intentional, and fit the narrative. Of course the plot as presented is a bit far-fetched and would never occur in real life - but it's a fun watch nonetheless.

Thought this film was below the standard of the first 2 Christie screen adaptations: Murder on the Orient Express and Death on the Nile. Cast wasn't quite so star studded too.

Cheers - I'll have to give those a watch.

At the same time, I really liked 1982's Evil Under the Sun - in spite of it being "camp" at times - intentionally so. For me, the over-the-top acting fit perfectly into the atmosphere that the director presumably intended. And I loved Peter Ustinov and Diana Rigg... and well, all of the actors and actresses actually.

What I didn't like was
The overall story. But that, IMO, is a fault of Agatha Christie's.

Why on earth would anyone plan to kill his love-partner in this fashion? It's way too complicated. And, with a moment's reflection, entirely unbelievable. But, I suppose, most (all?) Christie's novels suffer from the same complaint.

City of Dreams.

A powerful film even if some parts were a bit amateurish.

100% recommended viewing.

Murder on the Orient Express - 1974.
Good stuff. 8.5/10.
Ingrid Bergman won an Oscar in this film for best supporting actress, for playing Greta Ohlsson, a simple-minded nurse. Although her performance was good - it was really short and didn't stand out much. Not worthy of an Oscar by a longshot IMO.

Red One
Harmless, some wants to be Bond, some felt a bit tired retread of superhero.
Not sure what drew Dwayne Johnson to it but he's just Jumanjiing. Even less sure about why Lucy Liu said yes.

6.5/10

Also it's 8th November and it's a Christmas film. Why so early?
