Last Film You Saw

The Curse of the Werewolf

Classic horror hammed up to the nth degree.
Bloody hell.
Remember watching this late one night as a kid ( Oliver reed)...

Always loved the old monster films.

The old universal films was the best, always loved black n white films.

The wolf man lon Chaney jr.
Frankenstein , The invisible Man, Dracula ect...

Soft spot for the old Abbott n Costello crossovers with Dracula , Frankenstein and the wolf man.

Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1994) - 6/10

I've not seen this adaptation before. Kenneth Branagh directed, a decent retelling, it felt a bit too 'showy and shouty, bit OTT'. However, De Niro was actually decent as the monster.

Yeah, Branagh was the big 'lovvie' of that era! Did a fair bit of Shakespeare films while his stock was high.

Generally a very average actor and director, but astute in theatre work.

I watched a few movies over Xmas

A real pain [2024, USA, drama/comedy] - with Jesse Eisebnberg and Kieran Culkin, very nice a little movie.

Kraven the Hunter [2024, USA, superhero crap] - I lasted about 40 minutes in disbelief J.C. Chandor directed this, one of the worst movies ever, AVOID AT ANY COST AND THANK ME LATER!!!!

Jung E [2023. South Korea, sci-fi] - very watchable mix of I, robot/Terminator with a definite S Korean flavour

The First Omen [2024, USA, horror] - the second attempt to watch this after quitting first time 20 minutes into the movie. I managed to finish it, but I don't understand how it managed to get positive reviews. It was a proper slog just to get to the end see the clumsy ending connecting to its great predecessor.

Perfect days [2023, Germany/Japan] - a truly great movie, one of Wim Wender's best.

That'll be it, it felt a bit like watching a Shakespeare play or a musical and not a film. I was just waiting for a musical number to break out.

Sisu. Best way to describe it would be a Finnish Rambo set in WW2, ridiculously over the top and enjoyable. 7/10

Death Wish (1974) - 7/10

Bronson's character becomes a vigilante after going through trauma. It may be my ignorance but I had no idea this spawned a franchise, apparently this was the best one. Bronson can't do emotion so any non-action scene felt a bit pointless.

John Wick Chapter 4:

This one had the highest kill rate of the franchise, with 151 confirmed in the space of a few hours. Very much in the realms of the tongue in cheek, but I fully understood this before tuning in, so digested it all with a pinch of salt.

Out of the John Wick franchise, I enjoyed the 1st the most, closely followed by the 2nd, but take nothing away from Keanna's ability to dance the dance, a beyond the fascinating watch with a few scoops of nectar and Chicago Town pizza.

A special mention to that blind assassin geezer for his utter devotion to duty. It really amazes me how sight deficient people can improvise using only sound, touch and smell, to steer themselves around the mayhem of a combat arena.
He was good, but I'm not sure I would have selected him as my nominated second with dueling pistols at 30 paces : /

John was hacked at, and shot at, and thumped and kicked, and thrown down innumerable flights of stairs, punched out of windows, run over, and generally maltreated at every twist and turn ... but he simply would not die!

RIP John Wick:

Score is 6/10
