Last Film You Saw

Watched FUZE last night. Unbelievable plot twists, but also quite tense and entertaining. Set in London, the discovery of an unexploded WW2 bomb causes a total evacuation - providing cover for a carefully planned bank robbery. An Army bomb squad is mobilised and the police lockdown the area…
Quite a short film but many plot lines. We enjoyed it 7/10.
Think you’re being generous giving it 7/10

The Twilight Samurai (2002)

twilightsamuraiposter.jpg

In 1860's Japan, a humble low income Samurai nicknamed "Twilight" is thrust into a new role as a single parent due to the passing of his wife and is weighed down with the responsibility of caring for his two daughters and his senile mother. He seeks help from a childhood sweetheart but his sword skills are soon put to the test when he swiftly deals with her abusive ex-husband.

"Twilight" is forced to take up his sword again tasked by a recruiting clan to kill a famous Samurai who has refused to kill himself after his masters death.

Hiroyoki Sanada (Shogun TV series 2024) stars as the reluctant warrior who tries to make ends meet in a deeply moving story about the struggles to balance his personal life with the perceptions of public honour and duty all set in the final days of feudal Japan.

This film is a hidden gem in the Samurai genre, bringing a quiet introspective to the modern Samurai film like what Unforgiven (1992) & The Assassination of Jesse James by The Coward Robert Ford (2007) brought to shifting the modern western towards a melancholic meditation of the West.

9.8/10

A real hidden gem in the Samurai genre, that does for modern Samurai films what Unforgiven (1992) & The Assassination of Jesse James by The Coward Robert Ford (2007) did for modern westerns. A deeply moving and slow paced film set during the final days of feudal Japan.

Thanks boo boo, I will be seeking this out, I love visiting Japan and I love most things Japanese.

Thanks man, sounds like you know your stuff as he's a new name for me. I have screenshotted this and will add them to my watchlist. Let me look them up later.

Do you like Korean film too? As I said before, it feels like South Korea took over where Japan was throughout the 20th century. There's still great Japanese films (Hamaguchi and Kore-eda make great stuff) but it definitely feels like in the 21st century South Korea has taken the baton.

Also, away from East Asia, I assume you love Bergman too? You seem knowledgeable about film so assume you've seen some of his stuff?
I'm pretty ignorant of Korean cinema, unfortunately. What would you recommend? I loved "Parasite." Park Chan Wook is on my list, though. I've seen a few Bergman films, maybe five, and I think "Persona" and "The Seventh Seal" are incredible. I'll probably check out "Fanny And Alexander" next, but the theatrical cut is over 5 hours long...!

I'm a fool for any film with metaphysical import, so Andrei Tarkovsky checks just about all the boxes for me. "Solaris" and "Stalker" are mind-blowingly amazing, but very very dense.

~ Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter ... and Spring (2003)
~ Brotherhood (2004)

~ John Woo's Red Cliff (2008) (China/Japan/Korean co-production)
~ I Saw The Devil (2010)
~ The Handmaiden (2016)
~ The Wailing (2016)

Come and see. (War film)

Wow. Where do you start. 40 yrs old and I've never heard of it . Found it on YouTube.
A film you'll love or hate. Brilliant acting, specially the young kid.
Nothing cheerful about this film.
The last hour was horrific.
Some films really touch you and this one did.
If you don't mind subtitles give it a watch.
Here it is on YouTube. Watch it on your smart TV.
