Last Manchester-born player to score for us?

Deep down, we all know Manchester is not a place. Manchester is up there with Asgard. Twinned with Tuonela, the Grotto-heavens and Devachan. You can get the number 76 bus there. The 192 terminates just short of Iriy sadly.

So what is Manchester? A roundabout The Piccadilly Rats play on next to Market Street tram stop? Smallest big city ever.

I had colleagues from Wigan or Bolton say they’re from their respective towns. People from Droylsden said Manchester.

150 years ago most of them wouldn't have been though, Manchester was a small place and has grew and added, places like droyslden ( which is 10 mins walk from where I live) is so close to Manchester areas that there is no difference and I don't think I have left Manchester when passing through if I was in staylbridge that's also tameside I wouldn't class that as being in Manchester at all , but technically droysldenstill isn't im the city of Machester, which I think was the point about stockport itself isn't Manchester, yet reddish (like droylsden) are very manc while in a different borough.

We are all Greater Mancunians so don't really get that hung on it myself

I was born in St Mary’s hospital and have lived in Timperley, Wythenshawe, the city centre, Chorlton, Altrincham, my missus lives in Newton Heath... I don’t consider any of them not part of the same city. Same conurbation, same culture. With Salford and Tameside too we all have the same city centre, “Town” is the same place for all of us. A good chunk of Town is in Salford. You can live in Manchester City Centre (but be in Salford) and not be classed as Manchester but live by the airport in Wythenshwe nine miles from the city centre and be in Manchester.

If you drove from Timperley to Baguley, the Heatons to Burnage, Reddish to Levi, Droylsden to Clayton, Failsworth to Newton Heath, Prestwich to Crumpsall, Higher Broughton to Cheetham Hill, Old Trafford to Whalley Range, Stretford to Chorlton, Sale Moor to Northern Moor anywhere else in the world and it’d be classed as the same city. You have no idea you’ve gone from one place to another. I have no idea why it isn’t in our conurbation. It seems really odd to me.

I know people from audenshaw and droyslden that call Ashton 'town' and never set foot in Manchester city center always going ashton to shop or a night out, saying that I also know people from mount rd that have been in town about 10 times in 5 years.

On the going district to district and you wouldn't know it the sighs saying welcome to ...... or you are now leaving Manchester and the bins on the streets changing colour and the bee not on them kind of sets the markers of one area to the next.

As I said, I don't get hung up on ajoining areas not being manc, but the major towns ( stocky, dale, oldham, bury, bolton, ashton, alty, and it's imediate suburbs are deffinately not Manchester itself but part of a greater place.

When I was a kid no one ever mentioned this though, those towns were places near, no one ever mentioned the boroughs like droyslden or reddish etc as different.
The only place that you deffinately never called Manchester was Salford and there was a friendly rivalry between the cities

Very happy coming from Tameside and from the last data, statistically more City fans per head of population than anywhere else in the world.

In literal terms, it’s straightforward.

We have the City of Manchester and then we have Greater Manchester, which includes the city and nine other metropolitan boroughs.

So as long as you specify which you mean, there are only black and white answers. If you don’t, then it’s open to interpretation.

By the way, the OP said “local born” so much of the thread is a red herring.
