League Cup Final Post - Match Thread

Another way to look at it though - the keeper thing helped us win it. Kepa - by staying on HAD TO be heroic and save 2 or 3 pens - but he actually put more pressure onto himself! Willy would have save the Ageuro one!
Exactly mate, it reminded me of when Mahrez claimed that penalty at ainfeld and then buckled under the pressure. Kepa put the pressure on himself and embarrassed his club, which helped us.

Kepa was taking injury whenever we got some momentum. There was no cramp. Sarri wanted to bring Willy on for the pens, if he had, we might not have won it, he knows the players he's facing and he's experienced at saving penalties to win trophies.

Moss bottled a number of decisions, why no endless replays of the first second elbow? red card glossed over, Offside for the goal was too close to call, as VAR is supposedly for clear and obvious errors, it was a correct, if wrong, decision to go with the officials first call, if only that were true in all instances. Rudiger booking was clear, however he had got up from a previous bookable offence so should have been booked twice, Jorginho (how glad am I we missed out there) straight red? thought so at first, but there was a Chelsea defender coming across so maybe the right decision??

Zinchenko, proper game lad, motm for me, how long was Laporte carrying the injury, made a number of uncharacteristic mistakes before coming off, great penalty by Gundog, my mother would have saved Leroys', Raheems aged me another 5 years, tough game, all played well

Chelsea set up acknowledged they aren't good enough to go toe to toe with us, as if that needed any recognition after the 6-0, Hazard is undoubtedly a highly skilled individual, pity he falls over in a gentle breeze, and pity for him footballs a team sport. Pedro the same other than the highly skilled bit, Sarri.....oh dear, show some balls man, pretty much apologised to the keeper after the game, Kepa, shocking, and where was the captain to back up his manager (not that he should need it)

She would have saved Aguero’s! How he didn’t save that I don’t know

Kinnell that was hard work.....and only just made our train.
I think Zin edged MOTM..just over Bernado.
Sergio looked well offside from the stands so I'm surprised everyone saying he was on.
Thought our support was really quiet...but fuck it stick another trophy in the cabinet.

Both sets of fans were fairly quiet. No wonder as it was a pretty crap game. Thought it was excellent in 2nd half of extra time though.

A thoroughly professional performance by our magnificent boys. We didn't play our eye catching, silky passing football, not because we played poorly but simply because Chelsea sat very deep indeed, their penalty area was crowded nearly all afternoon and there was simply no room to breath. Two seasons ago (or at Wigan) we would have lost patience and lost to a goal on the break, but now we are simply too street wise and keep playing our football. "Finding a way" means going to penalties, keeping your nerve and winning the shoot out if necessary. The better team came home with the cup.

The shoot out was decided by very small margins but that's always the case. I have seen Jorginho take two penalties and they've been identical to today's. As soon as I saw him put in that ridiculous, exaggerated jump I knew exactly where it was going and how hard. If I knew, what kind of imbecile thinks Eddie wouldn't! Sergio just about scored but it was the goalkeeper's own fault that it beat him; if he hadn't spent so much time trying to out psych Sergio he might have got down a bit quicker. Sergio took advantage of his ridiculous jumping up and down. Luis simply hit the post ie didn't score. In the end Chelsea played well enough to stop us winning in 120 mins (with a lot of help from VAR) but were second best in the opportunity this left them to win it.

Chelsea were well fired up for the game, the sneaky elbow on Aguero in the first few seconds, was indication of that, they played the only way they could, in classic José style, not Sarri ball, but Sorry!-ball, as they all but dug a trench and donned tin hats to repel City, hoping to catch us on the break.
Sarri had clearly done his homework after the recent 6-0 drubbing, and there’s no way Chelsea could be that bad again, instead retreating to the performance at The Bridge for inspiration.
The stats will say City had the best of it, but in truth it could’ve gone either way, the old cliché of anything can happen in a cup final rang true, and it did, for pretty much the wrong reasons! Kepa’s histrionics on the pitch, and Sarri’s furious indignation at being defied in front of the world’s media will grab the headlines, but many City fans breathed a sigh of relief that Willy did not come on to replace Kepa, his penalty saving prowess and insider knowledge could well have made a difference, but it was City’s steely attention to detail, and self belief that somehow felt inevitable, Sterling’s confident penalty into the roof of the net, a fitting finale for the local boy done good
