Leaked Pics of NYCFC Stadium

I'm probably in a minority that doesn't really care less about a team playing in New York, its not MCFC. I understand about the commercial aspects of the deal, but they'll never really mean anything to me, and the money required to build them may actually reduce the impact we have as Manchester City.

Looks like it was just old conceptual designs

Yesterday, someone uploaded renderings of a proposed MLS stadium at Pier 40 on Manhattan's west side to Reddit. But what does it mean? Does it mean moneybags new team, NYC FC, is looking for a new home in Manhattan?

Our Dan Dickinson reached out for comment from Dan Courtemanche, MLS EVP of Communications, who confirmed, "This rendering was a conceptual design that Major League Soccer produced when considering Pier 40 as a potential soccer stadium." Now, the question is when "when" was

The 'leak' may be designed to put pressure on the Mayor etc to get things moving?

The Mayor is out in November anyway so hardly likely..I doubt that a building permission can be arranged anywhere within a year.

Ehhh..red bull arena is a much finer football stadium I don't like the single tier behind one of the goals it removes any intimidation factor the stadium might have

I'm with you. I'm also concerned about where the fans are going to come from. Red Bull fans will stay where they are and Cosmos fans are creating their own team so where are the x thousand fans currently not engaged in either of those clubs going to come from?

Can't say that concerns me either, anyone in New York who wants to follow Manchester City, will do just that, we'll get enough coverage there anyway, no great need for another club that I can see. I understand the global coverage concept, and the partnership ideas, but are we going to have a team in every country eventually ? There may be an opportunity to get young players from any of these franchises, but that will take time, and ultimately will they be good enough, or even get work permits ? In some ways I can see it even diluting Manchester City, that's of no great interest to me, could clubs in markets like the US actually become the chief club in a number of years ?

You have to understand that American sports fans work differently to British/European football fans. Sure, there are some who follow a team because they like feel a connection and will stick with said team, but for many Americans, you reach a point where you gain an interest in a sport - for football ("soccer") it's likely to be when you're older and something happens to bring football to your attention and get you interested - and decide you want to follow a team. The American fans then naturally gravitate towards a high-end team in their locale for little reason more than location.

New York Red Bulls are unpopular in NYC itself as it's surprisingly hard and expensive to cross the Hudson River into New Jersey (where NYRB actually play) so many fans want a team that's in NYC itself. But more than that, they want an MLS team in NYC. Sure, the Cosmos do have a decent and hardcore support, but for many potential fans looking to get into football, they just can't motivate themselves to support anything other than an MLS team as below MLS has a preconception as being of a poor standard and if they want to get into football then they want to be seeing a high quality product.

Many Cosmos fans claim to be outraged that NYCFC has essentially cock-blocked them from the promised land of the MLS but in fact the Cosmos owners specifically chose not to seek entrance into MLS, so NYC essentially is this massive (don't even say it), multi-racial culture (first and second generation immigrants tend to be far more inclined towards football for obvious reasons) where the vast majority of potential football fans refuse to follow NYRB as they are too far away to visit, and refuse to follow the Cosmos as they aren't attractive enough in stature.

Bear in mind that American fans can often be fairly fickle as well in their support - there may be many who, say, follow one of the East Coast teams because 10 years ago they decided they wanted an MLS team, but because they can't attend any games they don't feel a strong attachment to the club they follow. These fans will by and large be fairly happy to simply abandon their old team as soon as a new team turns up that they are close enough to actually become a match-goer for. Not all, but many will do this. This is a large part of the reason franchising and relocating sports teams works in America. They don't have the culture of a team belonging to the fans and the fans belonging to the team, instead they have a culture of "you support the nearest top-level team to you, or if you want to appear cool and edgy you support a lower-level team".

It's two years before NYCFC will kick a ball competitively, and their FB page already has 10,000 followers and their twitter 11k. Those figures they achieved pretty much within two weeks of the accounts being set up. Online communities are already discussing names for the "ultras" groups (in an attempt to look European, the fans who form supporters clubs and make the real noise at games like to call themselves "ultras" even though they aren't a shade on real ultras) and if you follow stuff like #nycfc on twitter a lot of NYC locals are excited. I think the team will do fine for support, at least as is typical for MLS.

IF a stadium will be built at Pier 40 it will be ridicoulusly expensive. But, it would also be one of the most beautifull stadiums in the world with an unmatched view.
Butt hell, if the sheikh wants to spend all his $$$ and it doesn't ruin Man City's FFP, then id say GET IN! (i know infastructure doesn't count, but who knows, they might alter the FFP)

Pier 40 would be amazing, but I'm pretty sure I read that it would be ten times the bureaucratic nightmare that Queens is current being...

This!! The do gooders of the Upper West Side would hae this tangled up in court for YEARS!! Not gonna happen, its a pipe dream albeit a nice one. It would be super cool to have the stadium in the city!!
