Led Zeppelin

I'm too young to have seen Zeppelin live (although I did see Page & Plant) but by all accounts The Song Remains The Same fails to catch them at their best live. They certainly have a reputation for being a great live act and some of the other bits that are available do support that. Anyway, it's all immaterial now...
Yep, same here pal - I’m only going off live albums and bootlegs I’ve heard.

I went to Kneb ( first show) and I pittied anyone having to follow Chas and Dave who opened.

Yes I went to that one. I thought Zep were very good. My abiding memory of their performance was how charismatic Plant was.

Of all the gigs I've not been to, if I could choose one to get in a Tardis and go back and attend, it would be one of those Zep gigs at Earls Court.

Yes, jealous of anyone who was there. Even on the DVD, the atmosphere on it is astonishing. They're just four guys who happen to be consummate musicians having a really good time together. And it's an interesting corrective to the Madison Square Garden footage, where they're really showing off (which I enjoy too, by the way). They're not bothering to show off at Earls Court — just letting several thousand people eavesdrop on them.

I saw them in Edinburgh at the Kings Theatre (the only rock concert that venerable old theatre has ever hosted before or since). that would be January 1973. Their sound system was far too powerful for the venue and I swear it permanently damaged my hearing. When Bonzo kicked off Rock n Roll with his drum solo I thought someone was kicking me in the head.
notwithstanding that it was a great concert with Plant in stonking form.

Same experience or pretty similar at Manchester University Students Union, Saddleworth. That was in February or March 1971. Quite a low hall, although deep. Everybody standing – no seats. Packed to the rafters, sweltering heat. And the noise! Probably the highest number of decibels I've experienced at a gig (and I experienced many, many in those years). Me and my girlfriend's ears rang for fully twenty four hours afterwards. I remember Bonzo pointing out a heckler in the crowd with his drumstick and telling him to “Belt up!”. I'm sure Bonham was prepared to come down off the bandstand and give him some.
Still the consummate rock and roll group, for me. Bar none.
