Leeds Vs Man City FA Cup Jan. 7th. 1978

Was just surfing through Youtube looking for something else (not porn honest) when this popped up

You tend to forget football used to be like this - Gordon McQueen takes out Peter Barnes - No Penalty!

Then McQueen punches his own keeper! - cue stern talking to from Ref

Oh, and a full scale pitch invasion - Enjoy

On what planet wasn’t that a penalty?!

More than any era, I’d love to go back to that one. Raw and exciting. English football reasserting itself. Must have been a great time to follow any ‘big’ English club. Then Heysel fucked it all up.

English football might now have a bit more finesse if it wasn’t for that horrible event.

Loving the celebration for that Peter Barnes goal!

We didn't know it at the time but we were just about to enter a long slow decline... Big Mal was brought back and proceeded to break up a pretty decent team

then it seemed to be just one slump after another yo-yo ing up and down through Bond Machin Benson Horton Ball Clarke etc etc

I got knicked at that game .before the teams came out ,a copper near us didnt like us enjoying our selves (prick) There was about 15 other City fans already in one of the holding cells in the ground .not one had been arested for fighting .once the Leeds fans went on the pitch.Loads of Leeds fans were put in our cell .Yorkshire coppers had a sick sense of humour .and when they took us to Leeds police station .Each City fan was plasti cuffed to a Leeds fan .There was no point pleading not guilty and i got £25 fine .Wouldnt have been as bad if i had seen the game

Thing is, that squad was starting to age a bit, but Mal made all the wrong changes. Barnes and Owen might not have gone on to be world beaters, but they were still developing and very much part of the heart of the club. Shouldn’t have been sold, certainly not at that time.

Also, no good footballing reason to sell Dave Watson (although I heard the reason he left so abruptly wasn’t football related). Strange club to move to. He could have made it Serie A, back then. Dave Watson was made for that era of Italian football. He would still make my all time City XI, alongside Vinny.

Fucking brilliant centre-half.

Went to the Dec 1st 1975 game at Leeds, that was my first experience of seeing proper football violence.

The day the cup draw was made for us to play Leeds in this 78 game me and my Dad had just seen City lose 2-0 at Leeds and I wanted them in the draw.Low and behold it came out that way as we listened to the radio in the car on the way home.

In the cup game it was kicking off/pitch invasion and my Dad said come one lets leave early(hes from West Gorton so no soft arse)but I refused and told him he could go.Of course he didnt.

I was a bit of a hot head in my teens, if it happened again tomorrow I would shit my pants.

No doubting that, he was immense
