More than any era, I’d love to go back to that one. Raw and exciting. English football reasserting itself. Must have been a great time to follow any ‘big’ English club. Then Heysel fucked it all up.
English football might now have a bit more finesse if it wasn’t for that horrible event.
Thing is, that squad was starting to age a bit, but Mal made all the wrong changes. Barnes and Owen might not have gone on to be world beaters, but they were still developing and very much part of the heart of the club. Also, no good footballing reason to sell Dave Watson (although I heard the reason he left so abruptly wasn’t football related). Strange club to move to. He could have made it Serie A, back then. Dave Watson was made for that era of Italian football. He would still make my all time City XI, alongside Vinny.
