Left Back?

Been set a task by a fellow blue - name the best City starting 11 that I have ever witnessed playing live

Now I started going around 1972, so I've seen a player or two, but call me old fashioned, I'm stumped for a left back

Obviously I know the answer isn't Angelino, Brightwell (D), Tarnat or Thatcher

I'm pretty sure it can't by Clichy, Kolly, Mendy or Pearce

But is it Phelan, or Power, or do I actually have to go back as far as Donachie? Pardoe was still knocking about in 72 I imagine, but I'd be lying if I said I can actually remember him playing

Or maybe the correct answer is somebody that I have completely forgotten about in my brain-addled aged state

Any tips, Blue-Mooners?

Anyone remember Eric Westwood? He always had Stanley Matthews in his pocket, and Stan said he never cared to face Eric.

You can't beat a long memory

It’s a strange one here. Many of the players who have turned out at left back for City were not really left backs and didn’t play a left back role.

Glyn Pardoe turned out in the number 3 shirt for City for many years but in fact really played as a midfield spoiler.

Similarly Fabian Delph and Oleksandr. Zinchenko have been the nominal left backs for City. Delph was a defensive midfielder while Zinchenko was an attacking midfielder. Neither has actually played left back but were playing fairly narrow in midfield.

Both Mercer-Allison and Guardiola embraced a sort of total football with players not limited by their supposed position.

Stuart Pearce was a superb left back. One of the very best. He had his prime elsewhere but still did a job at City.

Best ever is a difficult one. It’s been a problem position for years.

I said Pearce.

Started going mid-late 90’s.

No, I don’t know why.

We’ve had some shit left backs is the answer to this question.

Our last few right backs and I’m not including Navas, have been Cancello, Walker, Sagna, Zabaleta, Richards, Corluka.

They’re all decent players and all better than any left back in my life time.

My first match was 1998 but I became a regular in 2003 when I started working. As a child, there was nobody to take me and no money either!

Think mine was 95-96 but I don’t remember it.

Earliest memory is having a Kinkladze poster on my wall, being upset we went down to what’s now League 1 and Kinkladze subsequently leaving.

What a miserable introduction. It was up hill from there though.
