Leicester (League Cup) - Post Match Thread.

Oh ffs.

No.

He moves into midfield.

Wow. I never knew.

He still has to defend af fullback.

Did you miss the bit where he was stood watching the moon as the ball sailed over his head for Leicester to score ? No ?

Then plesse don't make me out to be an idiot for mentioning thaf he's a fullback.

Have you been drinking tonight Neville? You seem very lively.

He is a midfielder who covers the LB position when we are forced to defend our left wing. On their goal, he was covering the LB position and got caught out. Never argued that, but to suddenly LABEL him as a LB, just because in Pep’s scheme he has converted numerous midfielders into covering the FB positions.

This is just ridiculous.

He is a fullback. So is Delph, Mendy, Walker, Danilo. He never plays, in Fern or Silva or KDB's spot, he plays fullback.

Pep sometimes uses his fullbacks in a different way. So he has tried sometimes converting midfielders to fullback because they sometimes move more centrally to help in midfield & he hopes they will be comfortable there as they learned from playing midfield.

Then when the opposition gets the ball & plays if wide, they are fullbacks & have to defend, as fullbacks.

Zinchenko has been given a nightmare by both Bournemouth & Leicester, in recent games just by them putting the ball in the left back area. That was enough.

If Delph gets injured, he will be playing there v people like Mbappe or Neymar. Opposition will just put their strong point against him.

We are unlucky that both Mendy & Danilo are never fit, but that is the csse & Delph is glsss, so if we don't take action to fill that area, we are risking everything imo.

He isn't going to suddenly going to learn how to defend.

Strange one that. There were times in the second half when I'm not even sure we were even that bothered about winning it. I know Guardiola makes the same noises as Pellegrini used to about taking each game as it comes and doing everything to win it (which is a little hard to square with the starting selection), but even at the end, there was almost an air of 'oh well, another round' about the celebration. It was certainly in stark contrast to the euphoria last season, albeit the circumstances then were rather different. I just wonder if, knowing what happened last season and the toll it takes, he'd have stomached going out on penalties tonight if it meant saving energy for the bigger prizes.

Anyway, Burton or Bournemouth, please.
Don’t forget this time last year we hadn’t won a trophy under Pep and we were on a massive high with our run of wins in the league.

This season feels very different. There isn’t that pressure of the need to win something and there’s actually a title race this season.

I reckon tonight was more about getting the young lads, de Bruyne and Kun minutes for Pep than it was the win. I don’t think he’d have minded going out tonight that much at all. Maybe even less so if we’d got a tougher CL draw in the week of the final.

No.

I just don't understand why making an obvious point, that our fullback isn't good enough, is so fraught with difficulty, when it's so obviously true

He's not a real full back though is he? He's a midfielder who gets asked to play at full back and then moves into midfield as per instructions because we are short in that department. It's like saying Sane/ Sterling are forwards. They play there when requested but it's not their first position. Sure Pep is molding him, or trying to, but it's not a position that seems natural to him.

So you are right, he's not good enough at full back.

And others are right in saying he's not a full back.

Zinc is technically good but quite apart from maybe having to learn positionally how to play LB, he just isn’t quick enough.
Now what’s Walker’s excuse. Because the only reason he’s playing RB is he’s quick.
In my view Zinc is a squad player and I’m glad he stayed, but he’s no more of a liability than Walker who constantly gives the ball away and hasn’t much technique as far I can see.

Phew!

We made harder work of that than we should have. Missed chances at 1-0 nearly cost us again.

Brilliant goal by Kevin. It was great to see him get a hour under his belt, and he was my MotM, but some other good performances, notably Foden, Agüero, Stones and Otamendi.

Garcia looked very promising and Díaz did well too.

And yet another City 'keeper covers himself in glory in a penalty shootout. Well done, Aro.

On to the semi finals now.
