Not the easiest document to understand. Find the date and then click on it and it explains ! Someone on here works for the railways so can perhaps explain better if reads this thread.
I subscribe to a magazine titled "Steam World" - rail travel in the days before quite a few on this forum were even twinkles in the parent's eyes. Anyway to the question of why an hour or so extra travel time. As someone mentioned the extra time is usually the result of Engineering works. It may not mean partial road transport, simply the train takes a different route.
One of the articles mentioned a train leaving Preston for Glasgow southbound rather than northbound - it was simply the way to gain access to a different route. Scared the life out of the author of the article.

That reminds me of a scary moment over 35 years ago. I and my wife were working in Birmingham and needed to catch a train back to Coventry where we lived at the time. We needed to get back to pick my children up from the Day Nursery before it closed.

Imagine our horror when the train left New Street travelling North West rather than South East. It was going away from Coventry rather than towards it. I imagined arriving in Wolverhampton instead of Coventry while the children were being whisked off to social services. As it happened the train was simply using a loop line to avoid an obstruction and soon was back on the route to Coventry where we arrived in planty of time.

Thanks pal. Like you say it’s not the easiest document to read but I’d wager it’s buses between rugby and Stafford.

1985 boarded a train at Preston bound for Murray field to watch Ireland play Scotland. Surprised to see my brother and several mates on the train heading to Palace to watch City. Pointed out they were on the wrong train, took a while before they believed me. Once they realised I was right they discussed if they should carry on to Scotland and watch Rangers as most had Bears allegiance or jump of at Lancaster and try to make it to Palace. They decided to do this and it was a good day all round as City and Ireland both won on the way to promotion and the triple crown.

I remember coming back from blackpool on a lads night out a few of the lads were a bit tipsey mostly blues and a few reds .we were waiting for the train back to warrington we were singing city til i die and few others songs when a pint pot just missed my head launched by a load of utd fans getting train back.next minute some lad said to me when you get on that train your dead.anyway train arrives and these utd fans came at us from all angles i got kicked through one door then another onto the tracks.i stumbled back on the train and it was like a scene from the ok coral there was 9 of us and 30 or forty plus of them. One of scariest moments ive been ivolved in.ended up shaking hands onced it all settled down.

So Preston is the only friendly then Leicester City in Wembley.
I check Leicester's program, they have 3 games Wycombe, QPR, Villarreal before they play us.

4 to 1 is quite a low ratio for United.

What's with the trains I can't book tickets from Warrington there and back Saturday to Sunday and some of the costs are ridiculous, this will stop us going anyone have prices from Manchester, I have hotel booked

Just putting it out there, we always park at Watford and take the train in, thought this time we would avoid public transport and have booked a car space on just park for £10.50, 1o mins walk from the stadium, there are plenty of spaces on there and park on my drive ranging from £10/£20.

Be careful which area you book. For the villa game parked in Harrow the parking spot was fine but getting out of London afterwards was a nightmare.

Usually if we have a car with us we'd park in Ruislip on the street free but that game the tube was broken again so went a bit further in.
