Wouldnt be signing wingers if that was his intention.

Just a mock up attempt using the rumoured players:

-----------------------------------------Hart
------------------Bonucci----------Kompany--------Stones/Otamendi

Peres/Sane-----------Gundogan--------Fernandinho/Kroos--------Sterling/Nolito/Clichy

--------De Bruyne/Sane/Silva--------Aguero---------Nolito/De Bruyne/Sterling/Silva

Some form of 3-4-3 could still be used. Might explain the limited full back rumours.

or without attacking wingers.
---------------------------De Bruyne/Silva
---------------Aguero-------------------------Nacho/Sterling

Has been solid the last few seasons.. In the middle of a back 3.

No idea how he'll fare with just the 1 defensive partner?
this is a good point.

there is also a different pace in italy but seeing him play for juve in europe and the intensity and leadership he shows leave me reaaaally wanting this guy. hope the double in wages, chance to prove himself in the PL and playing for pep are enough to lure him away. and if he is just a ball playing defender, he sure is an aggressive one. ill donate some american dollars from across the pond for this one. what a signing this would be

i hope i dont get ignored now that ive announced im from the US! #cmoncity

Yes, he was. I'd even put Chiellini there as well. I'm Italian so I'm well aware of his abilites and have been watching him for a while.
Perhaps. In watching Juventuss I've always thought of Bonucci as the defender I'd want on my team, but often reckon he was deemed the weakest of the 3. With Chiellini historically always ranked in top lists and Barzagli being the actual best pure defender.

So the sudden notion that Bonnuci has skyrocketed past those 2 to best defender world over seems puzzling to me.

Like I said, I've seen many top list over the last 3 years and Bonnuci almost always was ranked around 10 or in the teens. I just thought it was interesting how opinions have changed dramatically since Pep's comments and now our interest.

I've been a proponent of Ball playing CBs for years, so of course Bonnuci tickles my fancy, but for the life of me I am shocked at how he has rocketed to folks best defender over a four month period...

Oh well I don't want to argue against a guy I actually like, so I'll let it go. I already stated he is the best fit for what Pep wants - Seeing as Pep himself believes that, that's food enough. But I don't think he did anything between February and today that pushed him past Godin, Silva, Hummels, Pique Chiellini or Ramos. Not that they've done anything special themselves, but reputation wise they've all historically been considered better CBs.

Think the NJ in your name might have given that away. :)

What wingers? The players signed or rumoured could play in a front 3. Or wide if we decided to go with a more traditional 4. But they're not Aaron Lennon.

It's impossible to know what systems Pep is planning on playing, but I am pretty certain that if he wants a player, he thinks they'll fit the systems he wants even if it's not obvious to everyone else yet

I think for the past 2 years its generally been accepted that Bonucci is the better defender. When we played Juventus at the Etihad at the start of the season; I thought Chiellini was terrible, shocking defensive display, I think every time he got the ball he gave it away. God knows how we lost that game.

To be honest, half the fans are as right as half the players we buy. It's not like we've not bought some serious duds as well some great buys.

Yes, I thought Bonnuci's calmness always resoluted with me. But the commentators and rankers always had the tackling, body checking, and fighting Chiellini and Barzagli as superior. That's the impression I got.

No room for Silva?

we don't need to buy 2 CBs
PLEASE expand on this. there may not be a worse fit for pep's system at CB than Mangala, vinny and his injuries weve covered, i like otamendis work rate and ability to stay on the field.

one experienced guy like bonucci and someone to groom like stones would be perfect.

Nolito and probably Sane and then add Sterling & Navas. On top of having no wingbacks or defensive wide players.

Also not sure the need for 3 at the back in a team that could/will average like 65% possession in a set-up similar to his past teams. Just don't think he is willing to surrender that control in favour of a more solid defence but i guess we'll find out next month.

I'm guessing Pep will have considered what system he wants to play and what players he thinks he needs to play it. We can either go with it, or keep criticising the need for every signing before we've even seen a preseason friendly.
