Leroy Sane - 2016/2017 performances

I was wondering if people could analyse the build up prior to Sane's header chance against Spurs? I think it is the second clip discussed on MOTD. KDB flicks a header on to Aguero and City have 3 versus 2 Spurs defenders, with Sane being the third Man City player.

I'm wondering if anyone sees it how I see it? My view is that Sane makes a big decision error by directing his run across KDB. I think Sane needs to spread the two Spurs defenders apart by running to a left sided position at the back post, leaving space for KDB to run into. Instead he runs across KDB, who is forced to stagger his own run and the chance goes when KDB has his pass blocked (until the ball comes back in for Sane's header).

Does anyone agree? Or have I missed something?

I think it is unfair to be critical using the benefit of TVs and all the different angles can show as well as in slo mo. These lads have to make real time decisions at pace, not easy

No, you didn't miss it. There were three or four occasions where the quick pass, and the right run would have carved them open. The example you mentioned was one. In that case Leroy made the wrong run. In the others Kun didn't see the pass quickly enough. It's easy for us with rewind to see exactly what the opportunity was. Bit more difficult for them though. It will come the more they play together and the more influence Pep has on Kun.

doesn't help when Kun gets banned a lot, and Sane can play well in a game and then not play for a month.

If Pep picked the same team every week we'd be a much better outfit now, but yet again it was Kolarov back in, another new midfield partnership, Sane back in. I don't see how they can really learn what Pep wants long-term with this method. It's just strange when players bought for Pep's tenure get less/equal time to those who are out of the door, or if Pep is having 2nd thoughts on them, then forced out the door by executives to make sure they're gone for good, for the good of the team long-term.

I think it is very fair to criticise decision making like this. Sane is an expensive, well paid player, and although I had a better view than he did, i still think the decision was unambiguous because I think he could see what to do from where he was. I took into consideration the view of the game that I can be fairly confident that Sane had, his vision wasn't obscured. I know how difficult decision making is because I play myself. That is part of the reason i was analysing it and asking for opinions - to improve my own decisions.

On this occasion, I believe that Sane could see that City were 2 versus 3 and that he was the furthest left. Therefore the best decision was fairly clear, not a difficult one. He needed to go to the back stick and then Walker would have been split between trying to mark Sane and KDB and Aguero would have had a clear pass to one of them.

Players are criticised all of the time. Shearer said that Sane should have scored with his header (I don't agree because I think it was a more difficult chance than Shearer thinks). I think making the right decision with his run was easier than the header chance that followed.

The only issue I can see is if Sane was unaware that Spurs had no player behind him who had a chance to get back.

I understand it can be difficult, but in that case, I felt Sane could see all of the players and knew he was furthest left. he knew his choice of run would definitely cut into KDB. It was as if he hadn't registered that it was 2 versus 3. No doubt his decision making will improve but I thought that was pretty basic. It seems like he is stuck in his own favoured habits in terms of runs rather than considering the team play pattern enough.

A video clip will help this discussion :)

Here is one but it is cropped so you can't see as well, just how much space and time Sane had to make his decision. It's at 0:49.

Hmmm, I'm going to have to disagree with your analysis there. I actually preferred the cross run.

Sane's run was the right run for a through pass. I think Aguero hesitated, and then DeBryune ran a cross route to continue the confusion.

Sane Didn't run across DeBryune he ran into the through ball space, and DeBryune correctly curled to the outside once Aguero failed to deliver. Aguero was the only minor error for failing to deliver the through pass
