Let the bodies pile high.

First off we would have to get a constitution to amend.

What Patel is proposing here will I think put her in direct confrontation with the Judiciary. If Patel then uses executive power to override Judicial power we are in the realms of dictatorship. The checks and balances of the UK system will be gone.

Hypothetically if a Judge refused to impose a sanction on a Journalist for this "crime" and whilst I am no expert there is probably no precedent for it, Patel could step in and I would not put it past her at all because she is an authoritarian.

But as somebody posted quite glibly the other day, at least Patel has not laid wreaths at the graves of terrorists.

And you’ve already got a Bill of Rights! :-)

And you’ve already got a Bill of Rights! :-)
Its a good summation of our unusual situation.

The problem arises with convention, it is assumed convention is followed, but it is not absolute. The Queen in theory could break with convention and refuse to give Royal Assent to an act of Parliament, then the three pillars are at odds. It would create a constitutional crisis, just as if the Judiciary refused to implement sanctions passed by an act of Parliament.

Then as far as I understand it the Bill of Rights was incorporated into the Human Rights Act and EU law. With the UK leaving the EU I have no idea how that stands now, and I don't believe it has ever been explained to us either, for all I know it could be overwritten by EU law which was a central tenet of the Leave case, taking back control of our own laws. It is a minefield.

Much is made of Magna Carta, but it has little relevance to today, Magna Carta was essentially a charter for Barons rights not for peoples rights.

I would probably support a written constitution, but then it depends who is writing it. That power is vast, actually scary because at the moment we have a rare and possibly unprecedented party of the right in power that is further right then any we have ever had. A written constitution codified by them could well be a document that is extremely authoritarian.

I despair at the lack of, well, anything coming from the Labour Party. That Starmer is fucking useless. I recall typing this almost word for word months ago and no thing's changed. A new and dynamic leader is needed ASAP or that void you mention may well be filled by something far worse than the current govt.

Fill yer boots

Maybe so,but two wrongs don’t make a right, these scumbags don’t care about their children I’ve seen it first hand it’s horrifying the way it’s going we will be back in Victorian times in the workhouses

Just a gentle reminder that it was the Labour party that introduced legislation to stop children being forced to work

If we lived in a society that wouldn't want to use children as labour we wouldn't have needed it but here we are

Because ...... Conservatives.

Obviously the statement is abhorrent.

But putting that aside there is a conversation this country needs to have because people will continue to die from this disease. The only way people won’t die is if we continue with complete lockdowns, which the country cannot afford long term.

So given we have to acknowledge people will die, what is acceptable, how high can that pile be? It’s a truly horrible question and one I would not like to be in charge of making policy to answer.

Maybe we should shovel the £247 billion earmarked to renew Trident into funding further lockdowns .... just a thought. After all we could afford £486 billion of taxpayers cash to bail out the banks couldn't we?

We didn’t spend £486bn on bank bailout, those were the pledges/guarantees offered by the government. I think there is something like £25bn outstanding from that which we may never see again. Financial services contribute around 3 times that in direct taxes each year to the UK coffers. Indirect taxes received will be significantly higher. Like or loath it it’s a significant contributor to all the things we take for granted.

Trident. Obviously that would cost jobs and maybe would cover about another 9 months or so of keeping the country locked down (our tab is about £500bn so far). Then what? Cancel HS2? sell the Crown Jewels? No matter what you end up pawning off or cancelling, eventually you run out of money.

So no matter how far you kick the can down the road, you still are forced to eventually make a choice about how high the pile can be.

Never said it wasn’t

And because their parents are either negligent , drug addicts or alcoholics we should let the kids go hungry?

How very Tory.

These are precisely the kids we should be providing support for.

have their parents only become negligent, drug or alcohol addicts since Covid?

Seems to me the shout out to feed them has only happened since Covid, so where the hell was the public outcry before then?

Agreed... but some parents cant even look after themselves let alone their kids. We don't have any support systems in place and social services have been cut to the bone.

To let the kids go hungry (its not their fault) is not the solution to getting the parents to sort out their lives. (and if you knew any alcoholics / drug addicts you'll know many of them are a lost cause without professional help)

Sadly most of the addicts come from very sad backgrounds themselves. I am NHS staff and witness this on a regular basis, a quick read of the old buff notes is most often an eye opener when you read their history.
