As regards to the aircraft having no bombs/missiles fitted it is easy to jettison expendable stores. In fact, I'd say this is the likely scenario in this case. Imagine the powers that be in Malta being asked by two Libyan fighter pilots if they can land there... do you not think that the first thing the Maltese authorities might ask the pilots to do is to jettison their armaments before entering their airspace?

Updating an aircraft, whilst expensive, is a damn sight cheaper than buying new ones.

I've seen fighter aircraft turned round (including weapon load) in half an hour ready to fly again.

I don't know, is that a standard procedure?

Yeah, it's standard procedure in the event of a misfire or something similar.

As much as you may not like it, what happens in Libya could have a very direct impact on your life in Britain. It sits on a shitload of oil that we unfortunately need and acts as a gateway into Europe for illegal immigration. In this particular case, we are absolutely right to get involved, and Scall is right, it's about two weeks too late.

If we need oil we should buy it. We should not install/prop up dictators who will give corporations good deals/allow them to control it.

Do you think we steal it from them?

We have been booted out of all the countries we invaded & looted over the years sorry colonised .so what makes it right to stick our unwanted nose in Libya now.?there are dozens of horrible dictators knocking about who brutalise there own people & we dont lift a finger to help

So, what exactly is a 'no-fly zone'? Because I thought it meant that no aircraft could fly over Lybia, yet the French have sent planes over... does a 'no-fly zone' only apply to commercial airlines?
