Verified twitter accounts reporting City are in a good position to sign Messi:

- Rodrigo Faez and Moillorens (ESPN correspondence on Barcelona)

Guardiola and Messi spoke on the phone last week to discuss the possibility of Messi making a move to Man City this summer

Man City are weighing up offering Lionel Messi a long-term contract that would see him move to partner club NYCFC after three years in the Premier League

Marcelo Belcher (Barca journalist who first broke the Neymar transfer)

Lionel Messi wants to play for City

Martin Bajkowski (Manchester evening news)

Messi to City, then? It has arguably never been more likely, but there are enough obstacles still to suggest it is still a long way from looking likely

Guillem Balague (Journalist)

Yes, City could be the destination. But it is too early to say it will certainly be. @lequipe say his morning PSG is out of the equation and the club suggests that to be the case. But it is more a "wait and see" than a definitive no. Inter is exactly the same. And there are more

- Martyn Ziegler (reporter for the times)

Man City have been working for more than a week to try to pull off deal to sign Messi and are seen as frontrunners:

Manchester City have been working for more than a week to try to pull off the biggest transfer coup that English football has ever seen by signing Lionel Messi, according to sources, but they face major financial hurdles

That last part rings true for any club, not just ourselves. Not worried

Our club know what to do and will have a contingency plan in place

Messi wants out. He is pretty adamant. No power play involved.
If Barca can’t convince him otherwise they will not keep an unhappy player on the golf course at £1 million a week with all the disruption it will cause with the fans and players. They will naturally look to cut their losses by invoking the buyout clause. There are the 2 possible outcomes: a) FIFA find in favour of Messi and he goes on a free-will take time but possible following court case
b) Barca will accept a reduced buyout payment - this could involve a swap deal with Garcia and Angelino and would be facilitated by Messi accepting a pay cut over the next few years eg half a million a week (exactly what CR is on at Juve) over 2 years which would equate to £50 million of the buyout. I would expect some sort of deal along there lines to be the way thing will go...hopefully!

Id be very surprised if the club were pursuing this at that price, regardless of where the money came from

Why would you be surprised. It is known tgat our owner has coveted messi for a long time - it has just been that prior occassions have never been true to messi wanting out.

This isnt just us rushing around trying to get Messi in, there has probably always been a plan in place should the opportunity arise - which now it has.

You have to ask yourself a genuine question that rekates to what went on before this - the cartel trying to get us banned from europe.

Although prior to the mauling barca got by bayern, there was mumblings of discontent from messi back then about leaving

There wouldn't have been days of chatting if the fee was a non starter. We have known from the start exactly what was involved. We haven't just found out today that "oh shit, Barca want 150m? better give Lionel a call and say its off fella, sorry for messing you about. I hope you can get that transfer request fax back."
