I believe Barca want rid for a number of reasons: Messi wants too much, Messi is a bit of a dick and unlike Ronaldo refuses to play where he is told, Messi seems to have lost a bit of motivation, they want to build the team around Neymar and they can massively invest if they sell him. I also believe it would be the right move for Barca to sell him now. With Bale going for 90 million then I don't see Messi going for anything less than 150 million. If City want him then they could probably get him or £180 million + 500k a week wages. I personally don't think it's worth such a deal.

I guess you could raise money with for FFP by selling players.

It's a no brainier at that price. The fee will pay for itself as commercial revenues go through the roof. Signing Messi would put city at the top table of world football.
You are right from a financial POV it maybe worth it. However, world cups make players. Neymar, Hazard, Gotze and even Balotelli have the potential of becoming the next big star if they do well in the world cup.

From a footballing POV people like to overplay the idea of One Man Teams. People like to say Tottenham were a one man team, but after losing Bale they are pretty much exactly where they were last year. Madrid have had Ronaldo, but have not even made a CL final. Messi in the year he scored the most goals only won the cup. Argentina and Portugal have won nothing. It's great teams that win and not individuals. From a footballing stand point, if you had that money to spend you would fare a lot better buying Muller, Varane, Pogba, Shaw and Draxler instead of putting all your eggs in the Messi basket.

His injuries have been mentioned. So let's be frank here. Messi as a child was pumped full of HGH. Ignoring the darker stories surrounding Barca, pumping a child full of HGH might have effects on his career we don't know about. In addition he overplayed just like Ronaldo did in desperate attempts to break scoring records. I think this could have an adverse effect on his career. Usually players peak at around 27, but I am far from convinced that a 27 year old Messi will still have his best days in front of him.

I think Messi is probably at his peak now and in my mind he is one of the current worlds best.

I still get the vibes from the many many comments on here automatically assuming City will be at the top table of world football should we sign him and everyone appears sucked in by that assumption (standfast one or two who see things similarly to me).

We might be at the top table in terms of having stellar names on the books, but if they cannot integrate well as a team, it means sweet FA in terms of footballing top table.

As Blues, we should want our team to win as much as we can as often as we can. To do that you need the best team in the world, that doesn't mean we have to snap up a footballing world leader because there is speculation all is not well with his current employer.

I'm far from anti Messi, and love watching him play, I just feel we could spend that kind of money more intelligently to move City towards the top table, which is wat I hope the powers that be actually do.

After all, we have pretty much a decent strikeforce as it is, wouldn't you agree?

Disagree 100%. Messi is a game changer. He single handidly changes games. You stick him in any team and he will drag them towards to top. Stick him in our already good squad and we win a lot of trophies.

All speculation though as we would never spend the £100+ million to get him here.

Not a dig mate, yeah it is speculation at the minute......but why would we never spend £100 + million on a player?

Because we're struggling to make FFP as it is. If those stupud rules weren't there then our owners could buy Messi a million times over with the change in their sofa but our hands have been tied now. We can only spend what we earn and even with selling players it won't be enough to pay the huge fee and his wages.

I think Messi would be more than £100m, but if he was that with a 6 year contract, it would be £16m / year do you not think that would pay for itself commercially to cover FFP ?
