On a positive side if we don't get him, getting Messi could halt us signing players for the next 3 summer transfer windows just purely due to his wages irrespective of his commercial wealth he brings into the club.

Maybe the best approach is to go for a player who's going to be the next big thing like Chelsea have with Havertz. We could sort 3 problem spots out in our squad this summer and get Messi on a free next summer. He could still be the best player in the world at 34.

barca are playing us big time, they know we are after messi and had a deal with him and his dad in place
they want a fee now because its manchester city and knowing we have money, so barca did a u-turn on a deal they had with messi that he can walk away for free

now do city have any other option other than pay a fee ? does messi say ok i still want out and buy himself out of his last season and i will lower my wages at city ? so instead of a 5 year deal at £600 million so £100 million will now go to barca

messi wants a new challenge and its not about money ? so lets see messi buy out his last season at barca and sign for city
