If a player is over the age of 28 he can buy out his contract after 2 years, so - technically - we could front him the money and he could walk (if he was truly serious about leaving).

Webster ruling exist but no one is using it. It is a taboo in the game. It is said clubs have a tacit agreement about not using it because it would be the equivalent of opening the Pandora box.

That would still cost a huge amount as he's on €1m after tax, so that's at least €80m, probably closer to €100m, I would expect there is also a Spanish law that prevents this if a player has a buyout clause.

There's also la Liga and tebas. The whole thing is a minefield. There's a FIFA arbitration panel which rule on such disputes but I think they are only triggered by transfers and their opinion is not binding on subsequent legal action

It’s an option Barca really don’t want as their layout will likely be £50-60 (his remaining contract) but it’s court and a judge (CAS) gets to decide which leaves liabilities open but in all likelihood Barca won’t get any money for 2-4 years.

City don’t want that as it leaves our players open to also being poached that way in the future.
