Bit of a myth.

Got to a World Cup Final and lost to a far superior side. Not only that but Argentina would have won if not for Higuain ballooning an absolute sitter in normal time.

Also lost two Copa America finals on pens which we all know can go either way.

Ronaldo’s Portugal finished 3rd in their group when they won the Euros. Any other year they would have been eliminated. He also didn’t do anything in the final after going off right at the beginning.

That’s football. It’s fine margins. Do Argentina win the WC if Maradona doesn’t handball it? Etc.

In terms of goals their records are identical when it comes to major tournaments I believe.

That’s the thing about Messi that people don’t seem to get though. Ronaldo is all about the goals and he’s one of the best ever.

With Messi he’s got -

The goals of Ronaldo
The dribbling of Maradona
The passing of Zidane
The free kicks of Beckham
The touch of Cruyff

The only comparison to be made between Messi and Ronaldo is that they’re supreme goal scorers. The difference in overall ability however is huge and always has been.

Man, couldn't have been said better. I really never understand how people can think they are comparable footballers! Messi is by far superior although much respect for Ronaldo for being even in the conversation.

There's a good chance that he'll be at City on a free but it will be questionable given his age.

Depends on his pre-January performances imo.

Just been watching some videos of Phil training with England and looking the dogs bollocks

He's filled out a bit. Looks like a man instead of a boy. What a talent we have there... you never know he could be our Messi
Yep i saw those clips, its not just that it's the atitude of the lad. It's the first time since watching SWP play for England i feel genuinely excited and nervous for him!

Right I'm over it. Decided we dodged a bullet

- It would have meant we wouldn't have been able to close the transfers we should really be concentrating on
- It will have held back Phil who can be OUR Messi
- It might have pissed off senior world class players, seeing Messi get all the acclaim and getting paid 2 or 3 times more than them
- It would have been a ridiculously expensive project that could have brought UEFA sniffing again
- He was only coming for a final pay day and a jolly with his old mates
- The speed and physicality of the PL would have taken him by surprise and he would have been a shadow of his old self
- This in turn would have led to fatigue and injuries and we wouldn't have got enough minutes out of him

I'm sure there's more reasons if I gave it serious thought...
Phil be our Messi? I want what you’re smoking.

Definitely think this thread needs a temporary lock for a day or 2.

A bit like some parents' alcohol cabinets - they left it unlocked, the kids went crazy while it was open, then they found out, shut it and had to deal with the absolute mess that inevitably followed. Needs to be locked until people grow up a bit.

FINALLY, now the messi panto is over maybe we can get around to buying the players we need and more importantly the ones that want to come to us.

We all know we need another top CB, ake is not the answer and Koulibaly will probably stay at Napoli.

Why is it the same every season we mess about with the price and talks collapse.

Don't worry big fella, the real signings will come next week, the players who will win us back that title.
I agree. Seeing Messi at City would be awesome of course. But our weakness last season would not have been cured by signing Messi. I can understand the commercial benefits of signing such a player - but the development of the team and tactics are more important - as Messi said himself the financial figures are totally unrealistic - that’s why clubs insist on these massive buy out clauses. Distraction over - move on now with preparations for new season.
