Unless we get him on a free next year (if the rumours are true he hasn't signed an extension) he won't be rocking up at the etihad anytime soon. I can't see us going near his release clause.

As with Sanchez would it not be better for them to take some money this season rather than nothing next ?

Messi has been following Chelsea for 3 years. Messi has not signed his renewal. The conditions are verbally agreed but not signed, it had to be Done a month ago. Terminates contract on 06/30/18. Last night in a forum of fans of Barça we realized that Messi is still in Instagram to the City but we do not know since when. I think it's recent.

I'll be honest, I'd LOVE to think it'd happen but I'm not holding my breath... we're more likely to land Sanchez - which I'd appreciate just as much - but we can always dream of the prospect of landing Messi.

The 'OMFG he's following City on Instagram' stuff is all fine and dandy, but do we even know if he's handling his own account(s)? We're making some pretty loud international signings, it could be that him/his social media manager are merely following us to see what we're up to.

I've seen a quote from Sheikh Mansour a few times, where he's apparently said we'll be making an enormous signing in the next few days... but nothing when you dig a little deeper. Anyone else heard/seen this? Anyone believe it? My Arabic leaves a lot to be desired, so I can only read so much :ha

Exactly... So why not make sure we develop them right & not spend £250m+ on Messi? Would love Messi don't get me wrong but I fear it's too late & we should of gone all out years ago.
Messi is 30 and has possibly another 2-3 years in him at the top. I watched the 2nd leg of the Supercopa during the week & I've never seen Barca in such a shambles. At the end of the first half, they were practically doing the mannequin challenge as Real played around them with ease. Barca looked totally broken and Messi looked utterly despondent.

However, news has just broken today that the contract Messi was rumoured to have signed wasn't an extension & that their President lied saying it was to appease their fans. Apparently 'the new contract' was actually an additional agreement to his existing contract for an annual pay rise for Messi with a view to contract talks resuming in July which haven't yet taken place. One newspaper is reporting that in truth, Messi only has 12 months left on his contract with the option to extend and he's told Barca that unless they get a whole host of established world class players, he wants out.

One hack is even quoting Sheikh Mansour as telling people privately that 'Our next signing will be the greatest in the history of the club'. It's probably all bollocks, but in this crazy summer of shocks, who knows?

Messi here would have a new chalenge and a point to prove for his all career. He would take us to the same level with Real (2-3 years time) in terms of popularity, support and revenue, worldwide. That would be nr 1 transfer ever. That being said, I dont really think he will ever move from Barca, but is absurd not to admit that he is a dream signing.
