He's 'only' actually on £250k a week wages, the rest is image rights and commercial sponsorships which come with him. However it's still a lot of money and while it's not conclusive proof, this possibly explains why we're pruning our wage bill dramatically.

I dropped some hints the other day but here's the story as I understand it. The Messi camp weren't happy about Barca's proposed acquisition of Neymar, which was planned for next summer after the World Cup, and put out feelers. It was discussed with the owners and our major commercial partners and a deal was sanctioned. In addition, we stuck our oar in the Neymar deal, putting the word out that we were seriously interested. We weren't but it helped panic Barca and they had to do the deal a year early and for more than was planned.

They're also obviously aware of what's going on with Messi and they're not happy with us, to put it mildly. If you look back in January, Rosell was sounding off about us "poaching staff and players at all levels of the club". They were also accusing Soriano of monitoring staff emails (which he's perfectly entitled to do). They were even more pissed off when we approached Pellegrini as they were also considering him. That's how they knew we'd met him, not because the meeting was in public, as people on here were blaming the Dos Amigos for. To get revenge, they waited until the eve of the Cup Final to release the stories, in order to cause us maximum problems, which it did. So, again, accusing the City hierarchy of mismanaging the situation was wide of the mark. We knew Mancini was going and Mancini knew he was going; it just all happened a few days earlier than planned because of the leak from Spain.

The plan (from our side) was to try to do the deal this summer, having effectively engineered the Neymar move a year early but then the tax case hit and put the mockers on that. I've no proof but I'd bet a pound to a penny it was Barca who were responsible for that. If so, it would certainly indicate they were worried about losing him but having done that, it was effectively the severing of their relationship and, as people have said, he just hasn't seemed like the same player this season.

I also found it a little odd that having trailed a £20m a year deal with Nike, it was announced recently as only £12m. I did wonder on here if some of that was being withheld pending something else triggering the rest.

The only thing is, with any transfer, it's not done until the ink is dry on the contract but I'm convinced that there's enough in place for it to happen. Next summer, we'll probably clear Milner, Lescott & Barry off the wage bill, plus a couple of others and that's easily enough to pay Messi, plus Tom Glick's hand will get sore from signing commercial deals.

This all sounds really possible but the only thing that worries me is what about the required number of home grown/English players we have to have? We seem to be going down the road of ditching all the recognised England players which I find disappointing - especially those players that would walk into any Premier League team such as Joe. I'd be interested in your views on this point

Please cech again. By the way, who are those england players that will walk into any PL team? Lescott? Milner? Rodwell?
The current pool of english players are simply not good enough to play the football we want.

I wasn't trying to get into an argument - I accept that some English players have to be moved on but I was referring to the rumours surrounding Joe Hart - I would be gutted if he went. But it was a serious question - don't we need to keep/buy some English players because our home grown ones are seemingly not ready for the squad

We need to have at least some home-trained players in order not to leave our CL and PL squads short of players and in the inevitable gap until the revamped Academy starts to produce quality players we'll have to buy them in. The problem there is that talented young home-grown players such as Barkley and Shaw may look at the reduced game-time for the likes of Milner and Rodwell and decide they're either better off where they are or prefer to join one of our rivals.

I get where you're coming from (personally I don't think Joe is going anywhere) but they wouldn't walk into our team (obviously) or Chelsea's or even maybe Arsenal's. When you're looking at the best of the best then Englands best are for the most part sadly lacking.

A few of us posted on here in the summer that it was a possibility and it appears that the press are picking up on it now. Sorriano kick started the Barca revival with Ronaldinho and maybe this is his attempt at putting us in a similar position.

Cobblers

Northampton Town have got no chance in signing him?
Nope, I just checked. They don't have a single Argentinean to welcome him. In fact unless I missed one they've only got one foreigner (a Frenchman) in the team.

Northampton Town, ruining English football since....

What about this?

Doesn't seem likes he's planning on leaving barcelona anytime soon

It his base!! He can reach it in a couple of hours from Manchester!!!

Hope no-one has their hearts set on him coming here,i can't see him ever leaving Barca. Some players dont want to test themselves anywhere else and when they do ,as Cavani and Falco have, they go somewhere easy like france and not to the highly competitive premier league

Not physical enough for the Premier League and will find it difficult to score away against Stoke on a winter's night.

Sorry; can't tell if that is a very unoriginal attempt at humour or a serious comment.

Nothing wrong with unoriginal humour but that doesn't raise even a small snigger. However, if serious: PMSL.

On a serious note, just how many goals has he scored in England v English teams in the Champs league again ?

Without checking I thought he just scored his 1st one last season.
