Neymar, Mbappe, KDB are better and they aren't going downhill.
I'd still take Messi for 2 or 3 years if available, he's still better than anyone else and will be even with a couple of years drop off, don't think Mbappe is an option. Personally I 'd take Neymar as a third choice of the 3.

I think that you’ve responded to the wrong post because I didn’t compare Messi to Rodney Marsh.
I saw a comparison made to Cruyff in 1972 and I corrected the year to 1979 so that the Cruyff used as a comparison would be as old as Messi is now.
Cruyff was well past his brilliant best by 1979 in the same way that Messi is now past his brilliant best.
And I think Messi could still be great for us (though not as great as he once was) going forward but we’d be playing with 10 men whenever we didn’t have the ball.

No I responded to the right comment because the idea that Messi is past his best and equivalent to a mod 30s cruyff is just stupid.

His last season he scored as many goals as Agueros best season in his life, and as many assists as De Bruynes best season in his life. Under a completely clueless coach and with a supporting cast that are completely incoherent and rely on him to do everything.

If you can find a 33 year old who was the best footballer on the planet in 1972, feel free to insert him into the Rodney Marsh comparison.

Read back through the posts and you’ll see that the Rodney Marsh comparison wasn’t made by me - you’re having a pop at the wrong bloke because I would never use Marsh as a comparison for Messi.
I’m 60yo and I saw Marsh play plenty enough to know what he was and what he wasn’t (and he wasn't in the least bit Messiesque).

I think there are still two aspects to it :
1) This is one fairly simple. He is the GOAT. Just seeing him in the sky blue jersey will cheer me up. Watching him play for City would be a dream come true. It will the biggest signing for the club. The media and other clubs would be wailing in grief. Top headlines for month. Tshirt sales ,sponsorships, mega deals and new followers all across the globe. Good PR and media exercise
2) His wages are astronomical. He will cost a fortune. He is Messi. He will try to hold the board and manager by their balls. May lead to other players getting disappointed or asking for higher wages. He may or may not lead us to CL glory ( Ronaldo at Juventus)

So it's all on Pep and Txiki to decide which one is better. Chances are he won't uproot everything he has in Barcelona to come to City for a couple of years

I wasn't comparing Marsh to Messi in terms of skill and overall ability, it's clearly no comparison. The point I was trying to make was that, like Marsh, the arrival of Messi could upset the while equilibrium of the squad and ruin the whole flow of our current playing style.

Some of the responses with regards to me Messi being a) past his best b) not worth it c) other players being better

Have convinced not to get into arguments now on this particular thread, atleast till there is a positive development regarding his position to moving on from on barca

Koeman officially appointed manager - President saying that Messi is central to their plans but what else would he say -

Lets hope Messi aint impressed or the damage is done/runs much deeper to repair than just by replacing the manager.

Surly now time to go all out for Harry Winks

For me, I'd be uncomfortable with his wage possibly creating disharmony. Every move would be under scrutiny, the media would be out for blood.

In a time like ours I'm sure he'd do well, we have lots of posession and like to play our way into the box, he also would attract attention on the pitch and by his mere presence create space elsewhere. But I also don't think he'd make the difference in Europe.

Still, what a sight that would be. Never going to happen. More chance of Sky Sports calling out United's dodgy penalties, but only just...
