Football is entertainment, it's a game and it always will be. It's not a real fucking holy war, not in its essence, not the way it was born.

You can use football as a social vessel for some pure sentiments and strong emotions yea; like other games it's become a mock-up of city rivalries and fights and wars, of troop community etc. It's a form of entertainment though and, as always, the most professional forms of entertainment are funded by patrons and sponsors.
