Lionel Messi

Well they just lost to St Louis, 3-0 away. Messi didn't play, perhaps he's realised just how shit they are and is having second thoughts.

Thought The MLS had an a very strict salary cap. So how are Miami paying his wages?

He is a designated player (a system that was somewhat ironically created specifically to allow Beckham to join LA Galaxy back in 2007), which allows Miami to pay him above the salary cap. Even so, his wages will be well beyond what is normally sustainable for even the best designated players (far more than Beckham, Henry, or Zlatan, for example), so I suspect the MLS have not only given Miami special dispensation to effectively break the prevailing wage structure of the club and league, but are also subsidising his wages (directly or indirectly). Based on the comments from the league commissioner leading up to and after Messi’s signing, they saw him joining in a similar vein to the Miami owner’s transfer a little over 15 years ago: a major opportunity to grow the MLS brand in the US and elsewhere more broadly. They were never going to let current rules (especially those espousing so-called “competitive fairness”) get in the way of bringing arguably the greatest footballer in history to America.
