There was part 2 of a programme on the ABC last night about these cholesterol reducing drugs, Ive been on them for 10 years due to my body's high cholesterol levels (Im not overweight and I dont eat high fat food.)

Lots of eminent people saying they actually can do you more harm than good, now I dont know whether to carry on with them, although my cardiologist definitely believes they are vital guard against heart disease (I have a family history of this)

undecided :(

Watched the clip mate only been taking mine 18 months and going to carry on until told by GP not to

would be very interested to her other poeples thoughts on this as my doctor yesturday said he wanted me to go on statin my level is 7.9 is that very high ? asked me to think about it.

Similar to the HRT debate on whether it causes breast cancer in women or not. Many top level doctors debate that it does. Some say it may cause a small increase in chances but that benefits outweigh negatives. Difficult with this too. Would stay on it until more becomes known.

I've been taking statins since i was 25 (now 35). I take the highest dose - 40mg Rosouvastain. Sounds like you have the same as me - Familial hypercholesterolaemia? HDL was 10.6 before taking the statins has stayed around 5 while i've been on them. I'm also currenly involved in a new study drug where i have to inject myslef with a protein once a fortnight - I'm currently half was through the 2 year trial. They recknow the injection should take my HDL down to 3.5.

Never had any problems with Statins and if i didn't take them i probably wouldn't make retirement age.

They keep lowering the accpetable level - about 12 months ago any reading below 5 was good. Now i'm told be my specialist it has to be below 4.5.

I was over 7 as well, Dr perscribed them over 18 months ago mate and it is under control

I see some people on this thread have a predisposition to the condition which, even with the best of diets, will make keeping your cholesterol under acceptable levels very difficult.
However, out of curiosity...... Do you all attempt to eat as healthy as possible and do you all take regular exercise, both resistance and cardio based?
