Agree with you re Fiats, wife had an Uno and a Bravo, I had a Punto and they were all spot on. Fizzy engines, fun to drive and surprisingly reliable.
There are some weird prejudices in this country ref cars - FIAT's always had cracking engines, great design and fun handling. All Italian makers struggle with a larger saloon type car outside their home country - just not as appealing to that market as BMW/ MERC / AUDI etc. They DID rot in the 60's and 70's but so did all cars. The FIAT group pioneered anti-corrosion measures on Lancia's at first to try and salvage Lancia as a marque but it never worked. They were always too niche. I fondly recall a mate of mine with a 90's Ford KA on which the fuel filler cap was already falling out due to rot that FIAT's were rotboxes - and also that their engine's weren't up to much. I was happy to point to his filler cap and advise him that the KA engine he had was derived from a 50's OHV unit from the Anglia whilst my wife's immaculate and rust free 1998 Punto had a modern OHC unit assembled by robots
