Liverpool (A) | PL | Post Match Thread

A few things concerned me last night regarding some of our players game management.

- Ait Nouri had two options when he broke forward late on, Cherki and Erling. At that point in the game, going for glory definitely wasn't the right option.

- Cherki taking that free kick after the VAR debacle. Surely that has to be a short free kick to keep possession or a punt forward and out for a throw in deep in their half. Can only imagine what would have happened if the subsequent goal kick would have resulted in a successful attack and goal for them.

Then there is the complete opposite type of game management

- Bernardo grabbing that ball after his goal, no celebration, let's get another. That's what you want to see!

Cherki booting the ball over the bar from the free-kick was one of the best bits of game management you'll ever see. It was 99% guaranteed that the ref was going to blow for full-time when the ball was in the air from the goal kick. A short free kick might have seen us quickly lose the ball and Liverpool booting in high towards our box, in which case the ref would most likely (it being Anfield and all) allowed that passage of play to continue.

Wussies! I still haven’t slept, but the Sandman is starting to call my name!

What a great game, great comeback, and statement of intent from the players!

First double over Liverpool since the 1930s says about all one needs to say about the moment!
We are not there yet but the potential is clear. Bernado reckons we are capable of so much more.

I dont understand why the big controversy over the cherki disallowed goal.....haaland is fouled but the advantage is played.....the ball still rolling towards the goal & then haaland fouls the defender before the ball crosses the line so therefore it goes back to the first foul & free kick city & red card. Although I can see why people dont like it but I thought it was the right decision in the end.
Because I obviously feel that no one committing a red card offence should then be able to directly prevent a goal within the same passage (phase) of play. We gained a miniscule benefit from the red card and free kick. Pep didn't agree with the decision neither did many others. The maximum benefit should always go to the attacking team.

It was a dive. Not a chance Dias does not get the ball either. Slot has turned into a moaning moron. It was a phantom foul for Slob free kick as well. No contact at all. I have revised my view that Arsenal are the only diving team in the PL. Liverpool are second only to Arsenal for cheating.
Yep, they never showed the foul again that led to their free kick goal, i thought it looked very soft

This is kind of what I'm alluding to. I think play has to continue, because if he'd blown and stopped play there would have been no goal, but it does feel like a player who wouldn't be on the pitch because of the offence he just committed should be taken out of the equation in the subsequent passage of play.

The other point being made is one about common sense. The letter of the law was applied, but fans are getting a bit sick of VAR being a blunt instrument that time and time again kills the joy in the game. Yesterday's situation should be one where the ref should be able to rule (assisted by VAR if necessary) "On the balance of play, with two fouls having been committed, the goal stands and no red card is awarded".
He could rule: “Fuck VAR, it’s a goal…..Full Time.”

Just a bit more elevation would've been good. Giving Klanfield a massive finger.

VAR and plenty on here are obsessed with rules. The spirit of the game and the discretion of the ref are being lost. The purpose of VAR is to correct clear and obvious errors, not to re-ref the game according to a strict interpretation of the rules.
Rules serve the game not the other way round.

I agree but as soon as you implement a system like VAR, then this is the consequences. People are also much more likely to talk about the spirit of the game when its decisions that benefit their team…

That’s football!

Yes that's the sort of common sense logic that would apply in Rugby Union. Unfortunately football refuses to learn from successful applications in other sports. Arrogantly believing they've got the perfect system, they lurch from change to change season by season, with no real improvement every time.
Every other sport, Rugby,Cricket ,Tennis has clear technology usage both audio and visual explained to the fans. How is it the biggest sport on the planet hasnt and if theyve nothing to hide why can we not listen to the reasoning.

It was the right decision ...... he can't go allowing goals to stand where two blatant fouls have been committed in the build up, and before the ball had crossed the line .... and it was right to penalise the Liverpool player for his deliberate intention of trying to prevent Haaland scoring in the first place.

He even managed to get in during the covid season. View attachment 183136
When I see little Mo dance into the area during a game, I am always reminded of that great promo picture for the film Platoon, with Eric Bana falling to his kness and his arms in the air. (as above)
