Liverpool (A) Post Match Thread.

Less about the results and more about the way they disrupt our style. They were the better team in the 5-0 until Mane got sent off.

You're right though, if David and Jesus are playing (we really missed them both yesterday, especially Jesus with the way Aguero played) I would say we would be favourites to go through.

Our ongoing problem against Liverpool is that we are tailor made for the way they play. They’re all about insane pressing all over the pitch and lightning counter attacking, and when your own game is based on possession high up the pitch and you haven’t got any pace at the back (bar Walker), it’s a recipe for trouble. Where they’ve struggled under Klopp, and Rogers before him, is against muscular deep lying teams who play on the counter themselves - Burnley, Palace, Watford. We come gift wrapped and I would hate to draw them in the Chimps League. They’d be our most troublesome opponent

We lost too many one-on-one duels, especially upfront and in midfield, putting unwanted pressure on our defenders. Fernandinho having his worst game was bad timing unfortunately, but a lot more players were not performing to their standards. Liverpool deserved it (just) and it pains me we gifted them another field day with the substitution of Sterling the icing on the cake. Sterling should never ever start vs Liverpool again, but be sure to put him on when we are leading up there for a change.

I think Liverpool got the luck that warrented their drive to beat us. The 2nd goal came after two fauls (although Stones should really be stronger than this), the 3rd was a mishit and the 4th from a mishit by Ederson unfortunately. Apart from that we really looked disjointed after the 2nd and I never expected that from us. Not where we are now, and that could be a big worry. What we need is to respond in a very strong way, or the last 3 games could be the start of a blip. We are definitely not the finished article yet much better than what was on show yesterday.

So we have seen that dippers only scored when we are producing mistakes under their press, not if they are coming from a proper build-up, as they don't have the creative players (and I guess they will struggle against deep sitting teams).

We have been playing into their cards.
So we have to find ways to handle their press when we feel we are shaky in our passing (due to atmosphere from the crowd or our confidence a bit low).
Maybe it should be allowed to play long balls even if we give it away, just to avoid those situations that cost us 4 times.

Dippers have had a perfect day and you could also say they were lucky.
Ox's ball was cracking perfect, Mane's too.
Ederson took the wrong decision within a blink and Salah got it right on his foot.
Anf finally, Firmino needed a foul to get to the ball and take the lead in a moment,
when City seemed to take control again after a difficult first half.
(btw that goal wouldn't been given vs us at the Etihad and many other clear fouls only are possible on an away ground, fuckin refs)

Pep certainly must come to a similar analysis. We need more options to handle the press, especially on a bad day.

Spot on is that, spot on. Liverpool are faster pacier attackers than us, therefore the space we leave with us pressing is perfect for them to run into with three or four fast players. You need to have eyes in the back of your head in games like this not think that you are in space, totally different when KDB got the ball, he had great awareness.

As much as I admire Pep for sticking to the attacking play for every game, there are times like this when you have to be solid and kill the game to prevent them from pressing. Hate to say it but Rags last year killed the game with a 0-0 at anfield, totally frustrated them. I don't want to see a boring game, but id rather see 0-0 than let 4 in. You win trophies with our type of play but if you want to be the elite best you have to also adapt from time to time. Would Barca have let 4 in a few years ago when they where in their prime ?

Jesus wept. We were 1-0 before mane got sent off. The only chance i remember them having all game was when salah was one on one with the keeper. Both teams had chances before mane got sent off.
There's saying, watch with your eyes not your ears!

Exactly mate...too many people listen to what the pundits and media say and then fall for the bullshit.
We were better than the dippers before Mane got sent off and the sending off just made it a bit easier but regardless we would have won in my opinion.

On the continent that would have been given as a foul but would never be given in an English league game. Stones simply wasn't strong enough.
I have got to disagree, it was a clear push in his back. If he had fallen over like Otamendi does after he has been fouled he may have been given the free kick more easily, (it was like when a striker, who's been fouled, tries to stay on his feet and does not get a penalty.)

Marriner was heavily influenced by the home crowd, a push in the back like that, should be a foul in which ever country the game is played.

He let a lot go for them & got the outcome he & his bosses wanted

Being rational we've looked a little jaded in recent matches and Liverpool always go to another level against us.
Probably a game too many when not at full tilt.
Would Mane be able to pick the top corner again, i doubt it.
