Liverpool (A) Post Match Thread

So Salah's push into Dias's chest is acceptable but the hand on his arm is a penalty? Can't see the logic myself.
So if that happened at the other end would you be shouting penalty ? Once you grab a shirt in the box it will always be a penalty

If he grabbed a shirt and pulled him back possibly. If he put his hand on his arm as part of a bit mutual physical contact - no. I'd probably be more embarrassed if one of our players did such a pathetic dive.

What a performance, just want to say, well done to the team and Pep himself for outclassing Klopp at Anfield.

Some may have complained that we started slow but I was happy that we played cautious in the first half. Rather than start at full tilt and leave ourselves exposed, we showed them a solid wall of defence with very few openings for them to get at and they slowly ran out of ideas. It would have been perfect if Gundo had put that penalty away because the miss gave them a boost for the rest of the half and gave them something to take into the dressing room at half time. I believe the changes Pep made at half time was the plan he had before kick off, keep them off the scoresheet and take it to them in the second half as we go through the gears.

Foden was great, a performance like that in such a big game is a real statement. One of the best young players in all of Europe and he's all ours. If he can build on that performance for the rest of the season, I wonder how much they'll be saying he's worth? Not that we'd sell him.

Gundogan was brilliant too, we really need to show him the love after all the stick he's taken in seasons gone by, he deserves every bit of praise he's getting.

There weren't any bad performances for me, so well done to all the City lads again, lets keep the wins coming. It just a shame that soft pen spoiled our clean sheet run, we'll just have to start another one to the end of the season.

FWIW, here's my take on the Salah penalty incident.

1. According to the Laws of the Game, you can't push or pull someone - it's a foul, and it pisses me right off if it's not called when I'm watching and especialy when I'm playing. (the offence comes under: pushes, holds an opponent, or impedes an opponent with contact)
2. At all levels of the game, referees turn a blind eye to a certain amount of pushing and pulling (and it's often referred to by commentators as a player 'using his strength'), especially if the person being pushed/pulled tries to play on or pushes back.
3. In certain situations, a push or a pull (even a small one) can completely put you off (happened to Raz many times, not least by Kyle Walker when he was at Spurs), but if you stay on your feet, you get nothing.
4. The consequence of all the above is that if you're a striker who keeps getting grabbed (even a little bit), you might eventually say "fuck this, let's try going down", at which point the referee may well give a foul. Or not. More likely to if your shirt's red, of course. Then your incentive is to go down every time you feel contact.

So you can either:
a) write it into the Laws of the Game that a push/pull has to be significant to be called, in which case things mostly remain as they are now, it's not a foul, and Salah gets a yellow for his ridiculous dive.
b) any pushing/pulling is called as a foul (as is currently in the Laws of the Game), in which case it was a penalty, Salah wouldn't need to pretend to be shot, and we'd get 4 or 5 penalties every game (of which we'd miss 4 or 5).

I feel a bit sorry for the kid. Seems it's the only bonding he gets with his dad... he's clearly happy when they do well as dad is happy. It's kinda sad honestly.
It is desperately sad, and you wonder where the kids mum is. Exposing an impressionable kid to a idiot like that for 90 minutes force feeding him bile is not good parenthood.

I've watched the Salah swan dive about half a dozen times now, and the more pathetic it looks for the viewing. I don't mind the pen, but why does not every team in the PL get a pen for a defender touching yer arm!
Its fucking amazing isn't.We get nowt even when feet get wiped out. The odd pen out ot 2.

We were just better than them, it was that simple. Some aspects stood out to me.

1. I have never seen Salah so quiet in a big game, Zincho played him superbly.

2. Dias is human, his mistake though rather than damaging us, spurned us on and the togetherness we showed stood out.

3. Gundog. Missed the penalty, scored twice and never stopped with his passing , he never hid, a real testament to his character.

4. Raz made one of the "worlds" best full backs look like a sunday league player when he ran at him at him and he broke his hoodoo. An important moment

5. Rodri was immense, he dominated the midfield, made important interceptions, passed the ball intelligently and was a real physical presence, He plays very differently to Ferna but on yesterdays showing he is the heir.

6. The whole team worked so hard, everyone played their part and whilst some had games that didnt show them at their best, you can not fault any of them for their work rate and willingness to press, close down, tackle and support each other

and 7

Fuck me maybe Pep was right in what he said about Phil and Messi. He was magnificent. He is so talented it is scary,. His goal was Messi like, but what impressed me more than that, was the last minute he was still chasing back and working hard. That is ingrained in him now and he is one of our very own. He is defo making a lot of the opinionated journos who thought he would never get a chance to play/should go out on loan look very silly. I loved how Ederson ran the full length of the pitch to celebrate his goal with him, it meant a fucking awful lot to them all.

Its a nice feeling on a monday morning, lets hope our heads on the Swansea game, as their records to be broken and silverware to win.

Come on City we could win the lot again
Excellent assessment as always, Russ.
