Liverpool (A) | Ref Appointment

He reffed it well. Made a mistake not booking Mane for a cynical one in the 1st Half on Mahrez. Was surprised he booked Thiago so early but it was a shocker of a tackle and he'd have had questions to answer if he hadn't.

Their penalty is a penalty but I wish they'd book the players for the theatrical falls. It can be both a foul and a dive

It's become normal to occasionally see that given as a penalty/foul elsewhere on the pitch, but there is absolutely no impediment on Salah to prevent him a goal scoring opportunity, it was merely minor contact. That's why it is not a 'stone cold' decision. I don't mind as long as this is applied evenly to each team, within the same game.

It isn't. Some players get more of these than others, and everyone knows who they are.
Fair point.

However poorly one thinks the ref performed, it's probably high time we got off this false narrative that they were awarded a soft penalty, they were not!

It was a stone cold penalty. Dias messed up, panicked and pull on Salad impeding his ability to advance towards goal. That is a foul anywhere on the pitch and a penalty in the box.

Now, did salad flail and fall like a 2 dollar extra on a D rated movie set? Yes! He fell like he had been shit with a put your hand up bullet.

But none of the above changers the fact that Dias hand checked him 2ice. Clean and clear penalty!

Carry on...
Yep, thats how i saw it!! Dias has been nothing short of a phenomenon for us since he signed. However was a poor touch and then compounded the error with a clear pull... No arguments about that being awarded...

I also posted exactly that. Strangely the commentators didnt even mention it had happened. Phile was taken out by a push in the back. Even if Oliver didn't see it, it should have been brought to his attention. So despite us wacking them the bias was there for all to see.
I guess it just re-enforces the point that we have to take our chances and beat these teams by enough goals that VAR, bias from referees etc just doesn't matter by the final whistle, which we certainly did yesterday :)

Just wathcing the highlights and noticed how loudly Henderson celebrated the penalty miss. Thought Liverpool had class...

Irrespective of whether it was a penalty or not, such contact as there was, was clearly not the cause of the starburst fall and yell of pain. That was clearly simulated with the aim of gaining an advantage. Ie ensuring the ref gave a pen.
I find it worrying that so many refs fall for Salahs cheating and range of tumbles. Likewise Ratface.
Refs surely notice red team players do not fall with the same amount of contact outside the area. They only have to look at a few minutes of a rugby match to see how hard it is to drop a man. They are willingly fooled.

Despite our pre-match expectations, I think the ref had a good game yesterday

Salah was auditioning for corrie with his fall, but Ruben did place an arm on him and sadly that’s the state of football these days.

Think I’ve seen someone on here mention it before, but it would be good to steal that rule from ice hockey where even if it’s a “foul”, the player still gets booked for embellishing / theatrical falls. Shouldn’t be a difficult call with VAR (but who knows?)

The probelm with this is that res have to start giving penalties for fouls without the theatrical fall. It seems to me that any foul in the box is only given if it is made blatantly obvious by the fouled player. Look at the players who try to stay on their feet (I can think of plenty of examples with Sergio and more recently with Phil) and don't get the penalty. Would a penalty have been given in the 3-2 against QPR if Kun hadn't scored? How many times do you hear the commentator say "if he'd gone down, that's a penalty". Gets me so cross: why does a player have to go down to get the pen?

Agree. That and the Salah penalty are clear examples of decisions that are given at one end, not the other.
