Liverpool FA Cup s/f (N) | Post Match Thread

I was sure we would lose the tie having seen what Atletico took out of us so I am honestly delighted that we had them worried for the last 5 minutes.

We lost, we played poorly and I’m already over it.

No issue with criticism but some of the stuff written in the match day thread is fucking ridiculous.

Win the league again and I’m a happy bunny. The CL will be a bonus but it’s not a competition I’m enamoured with and never will be I suspect.

We do neither, we will be back again next season and the world will still be turning.
The problem with winning the league and not the CL is that the dippers will win it.
Not a good option for me that.

By the way, Pep’s put so much pressure on himself to win one of the PL or CL after tossing that off today.
I don't think it changes the pressure at all really. He still has to win at least the title and/or the CL. Nothing has changed with that defeat. Least of all the pressure.

I hate to say it, but we really really need to show up in the league and UCL now, and we can’t allow for any more Pep big game disasterclasses like Lyon, Chelsea x 2, today and the other few matches that his tinkering has let us down. From now until the end of the season, best XI only.

We’re staring down the barrel now of a Liverpool trophy haul that could be undeservedly large. They’ve won the League Cup, are in the FA cup final, have an easy route to the UCL final and are just 1 point behind us in the league. That is absolutely sickening that we didn’t show up today.

They were clinical, we weren't only difference

Yep.
To which I would simply add — and I still think Zak's pretty good as a back-up keeper — they were playing their world-class keeper, we weren't playing ours.
You're anything less than a top-class keeper, you get found out against this lot. You don't against Peterborough and Fulham.

Looking at it in the most positive light I can:
  • It was good to see a bit of fight in the second half.
  • Well done Jack getting a goal. Might ease some pressure for the big games ahead.
  • Ake was pretty damn good again.
  • We didn't crumble the way it looked like we were going to.
  • Even with a second string side and awful mistakes, we still could've actually done them. - They're good, but they're honestly not that good.
  • Salah's crap run continues.
  • Chelsea might still turn up and beat them in the final.
  • They're laughing now, but if we use this and fire ourselves up, we'll be laughing in May, and that's all that matters.
Also just a note to say obviously Steffen was poor today but I genuinely feel awful for the guy and hope he doesn't take too much crap on social media and all that. He's a really decent bloke by all accounts and I'm sure he'll be kicking himself harder than anyone tonight over what happened.

Let's move on.

On Pep that defeat.

Better management on his part maybe we could have won that.

He had given up on this game, hence why there was only one belated Sub so late.

He makes Subs earlier and we go on to win, He then has to admit maybe i got it wrong to start with.

So he waits until come back looks virtually impossible before making a token Sub, unfortunately he scores more or less immediately.

Liverpool were there for the taking.

WTF is his problem with substitutions.

Same Man was begging the FA to make it 5 permissible Subs per game.
You cant blame Pep for that second goal. Or the 3rd at the near post. Only when the season is over will we know if Pep made the right calls today.

Its as if we needed a world class striker to put those chances away. Good job then we decided to spend £100m last summer on a midfielder we didnt need. We should apologise to the world of football if our ineptitude in the transfer window gifts the dippers a quadruple.

- I like Steffen, I think he's about as good a backup as you can get who won't want to go elsewhere to start, but without Ederson it changes our entire game. The obvious fuckups notwithstanding, against Liverpool we need both the cool heads and extra pass to get out of their press, and without it it puts the rest of the team under pressure.

- Ake, and maybe Mahrez, was the only player to come out of that with an improved reputation.

- Every caveat accepted, that first half is as poor as I've seen us in I don't know how long. It wasn't our typical poor game either, our legs were gone but even more confusingly our shape was all over the place.

- Strikers sometimes miss sitters, but fuck me what I'd have given for Jesus to bury that big chance where he had time and the whole goal to aim for.

- Showed some fight in the second half at least. We played a weakened team against their best eleven, denied them a proper statement win, at least didn't let them to rest or coast through the game, I don't think that performance will fill them with confidence. Let's hope Chelsea turn up at the final with a point to prove.

- Brighton is now a big game, and let's hope Ronaldo the sex offender has one last big game in him.

- Can we lay off, just for a bit, all the "Pep cost us that game, he's a disgrace" stuff?

Looking back on it now, I think Pep surrendered the game before we even kicked off, considering the lineup and the lack of urgency shown by the players at 1-3.

Steffen was holding on to the ball like we were leading 3-1, not trailing by that score in a knock-out match. The only times we looked like we wanted to win the game were in the first couple of minutes of the second half and after Bernardo scored. The rest of the game, we strolled around as if we had all day, or we were being rushed and pressed off the ball by Littlewoods.

All in all, a very disappointing day. I just hope that we go on to win the title now.
