Liverpool (h) - CL QF post match thread

31 shots and only 3 on target by City

Liverpool whereas had 13 shots and 7 on target over the course of 2 legs.

That's the difference. Chuck in some headless displays by certain individuals and no wonder we're out.

2 goals disallowed?

Clear penalties denied in both games?

I still believe Peps system works. I don't think it is that Klopp has his number, but more the players. We're buying players based on potential hoping they reach it and become great players. This means we will have to be patient, especially with the forwards. I think they're so important for the system we run and Klopps system really takes away what they are most comfortable doing, which is running into space and taking defenders one on one and playing it towards back post. They were doubled whenever the ball was wide forcing them to cross it in when we have no height. We have no one in the box that attacks the ball. I think Van Dijk won 70% of crosses that went into the box between the two legs. After tonight, I think Bernardo needs to get more playing time. He brings something different compared to everyone else. He seemed hungry to beat his guy one on one and score. I don't even remember the last time Sane, Sterling, or Jesus took a shot from as far out as he did tonight and got close to scoring a goal. He has gotten the least playing time and plays with the most confidence

I’m more worried about playing Spurs next.
On a plus side, the delusional dippers will never win the PL.
I really can’t understand that a team that is so far behind us in the league, spanks us twice quite easily.
Over the 2 legs, they were the better team. We couldn’t even get a shot on target at theirs, so we can’t have any complaints.

Klopp is a cup manager never win the league with them.

Leroy should have run at the fullback once he'd been booked but he let him off the hook

One panorama/general dynamic is the following, i don't think it is even opinion, stats i dare say would back this up...

Our whole game revolves around our attack being our defence right? So when that attack fizzles out and stops working this leaves us wide open, our goal margin being our actual defence. Defending as Mourinho has his teams drilled is beyond us and it is no anomaly that they have Liverpools number. We can't fully switch to defence, the aim is get the ball back to attack again. Having genuine defensive discipline is not in our armoury yet. This i feel has cost us badly at critical moments this season.

Earlier in the season our possession carried serious goal threat against anyone, even the best. It has deserted us recently. So when we are so total in our game, any flaws kill the whole process. Think of Utd being modular and heavily secured on raid 1/5 with us a ramdisk running a very delicate script with low error tolerance in a country with a dodgy power supply. We are brutal when we work but any glitches and it is catastrophic to our game.

You can moan about bent refs all day long, but it has to be said Liverpool were better than us over both legs, they took their chances, we didn't.

Five goals don't lie....poor defending.

Fuck me we had 3 goals disallowed & certain pens turned down, not a was it wasn’t handball.

That’s fucking huge.

At last someone else gets it and in the meantime, whilst we wait for the big one we can bask in the glory of a league and cup double.

Roma have just turned around a big deficit against Barcelona, we crumbled, we were 2 0 up in 45 minutes against the scum they got 3 in 45, we couldn't even manage 2 goals tonight and lost both legs, we now travel to spurs at weekend with 3 defeats on the bounce, how do you think the players mindset will be now
So you're honestly trying to make out an offside goal against the run of play doesn't change a game? An onside goal ruled out doesn't let the opposition off the hook? A penalty not given and a possible red card means nothing?...

One of which was offside, and another when the game was dead and the city players deflated.

So, we really cinceded 3 upto the hour mark today.
Roma and Barca conceded 4 each, does that mean they are both crap?

We were playing the second best team in the league and one of the best in Europe.

At half time today, there was a 3-goal swing caused by the Refs, otherwise we should have been in command.

At this level, we were not going to win 10-0, and its about fine margins.

Good to know that some people see it

This type of game is what it really feels like to be a city fan. I can't believe we have not gone through tonight watching that first half performance, you could say the same for Saturday as well. Pep needs to earn his money now and pick up the players for spurs.

Fed up of all this rubbish about us not having shots on goal or enough goals from all the possession. Last Wednesday should have been 2-1 to Liverpool. Saturday should have been 3-3 at least. Tonight should have been 2-0 at half time which may have been enough. Correct decisions could have made for a very different week.

Defence is a concern though, I concede that.

Strange game.

We put in arguably our performance of the season in the first half, yet we were eerily passive and uninspired in the second. I can only assume we were exhausted after a scintillating first half display.

We seem to have rediscovered our great talent of conceding every single time our opponents conjure up an attack.

I don’t know what’s happen to Ederson. He must have borrowed Bravo’s gloves.
Saturday's game all over again

Leroy should have run at the fullback once he'd been booked but he let him off the hook

He can't because he can't take people on outside. Or at least he doesn't have the confidence to. He looks incredible coming inside. Next year....it'll be different.

Every single one of them on the pitch worked their absolute arses off and unfortunately ran out of steam.

I thought Sterling was brilliant, always trying to run at them and take them on... i feel like Sane should have done more against Alexander Arnold once he was booked.

Looking forward to seeing Laporte and Stones together.

Bad time for repeatedly poor 45 mins.
First half, Anfield. Last two second halves at Etihad.
Looks like the lads, or at least some of them, are knackered.

Bad time for the worst run of results in years.

Time to regroup and get back to basics.

It really isn't. In the big games they are decided by small margins, like 2 good goals disallowed and a penalty not given. Maybe even a goal for the opposition that should have been ruled out.
If you think FOUR decisions going against don't count I give up.
