Liverpool (h) - CL QF post match thread

I think this season even though we have the highest goals for and least against in the league, has been a lot about missed chances - not hard chances but really easy ones. You can see how incensed Pep is when we miss them. Having said that

Well if we did manage to cock it up it would be the most calamitous collapse of all time wouldn't it? I get a feeling the rags will drop unexpected points somewhere and we will win it when not playing for once. About time really.

Do people not realise that if united drop just ONE point, we only need a single victory.
Edit..I mean draw one game as you can’t drop one point anymore lol...

Bang on. Klopp was bricking it. If that second goal counted, we are UP for the second half and our manager is still on the bench.

Momentum is so important in football as we found out twice last week... if it’s given to you, you usually get to where you need to be. If it’s taken away it’s extremely hard work.

If both go against you over two legs it’s like pushing water up a mountain.

I’m not sure if this has been covered but to finish a Champs League QF with a back 4 of Laporte, Fernandinho, Otemendi and Walker is worrying - as a group not good enough for that level

In terms of forwards. Again, for this level, just not up to it. 1 goal for all that possession and pressure isn’t good enough as the opponent is always likely to have a good spell(and score) at some point in the game

I feel sorry for Sane. Everything has gone through him for the last week and when he looked up, there were rarely any good options for him

We need to get back to basics and do what’s worked all season 433

That point may have already been reached.

There's no doubts. There's capitulation (saturday) and desperation (today) but you only have to look at the first half on saturday and tonight to know whoever is giving the fucking half time team talks should take a break and that's the only problem :)

We might not win on Saturday, I think we'll lose, but we're a very very good team with 6 games to get 2 wins, i know it's us, but let's chill out and try to enjoy this.

not as bothered about this one as saturday. that killed me. we weren't expected to go through anyway. proud of our team
Giving up my season ticket after 20 seasons next year for personal reasons.
I am, and always will be, so glad to have witnessed the football we've played this season - that includes the first half battering we gave Liverpool tonight.
I will continue to watch my team from a distance knowing it's in good hands, and hoping eventually to see us lift another European title despite the blatant corruption involved
(Congratulations to Roma for ripping up the script as well)

Fine margins , and if all the refereeing decisions go against you then you're stuffed.
Imagine if the Roma goal that made it 4-1 at Barca had been wrongly disallowed, then Roma are out.
We were on the wrong end of THREE goal decisions against the dippers.
The media will play it that tonight's result would have still been 2-2 but that's not the point, goals change games and if the first leg is 3-1 or even 2-1 (as it should have been) then at 2-0 to us tonight at half time(as it should have been) the result could have been entirely different.

Could have been but I’m not convinced with our defence or lack of one, it would have made much difference. I always thought Liverpool would score tonight and they did. We looked a completely different side from kick off 2nd half. We had shot our bolt energy wise first half.

They have proven to be a very tough but to crack this season bar the first encounter and overall they were the better side over the 2 legs.

Yep. If the refs correctly judged the offsides we lose the first leg 2-1 and go in at half time tonight winning 2-0 and leading the tie

Fucking pisses me right off. Decisions do not even themselves out over a season for us

Sure, the referee was HORRIBLE over the last 3 matches.. some major decisionsed missed (or ignored)
sending offs
penalties
disallowed goals..

but, referrees don't typically score goals..

and we've conceded 8 (from long balls mind you) in the last 8 days..

We absolutely must sort that out if we are to improve next year
Possession ... got it
scoring goals... got it
defending possession .. got it
defending long balls.. nope.. long way to go

we have been exposed in the last week.. teams will sit back and defend, soak up pressure and when they get the opportunity for a long ball, they'll play it and flood forward..
the stokes and evertons will fire one up field to a single player and sit back.. but teams with a bit more ambition will give them options and we will struggle like hell to defend it..

we need more speed and height at the back.. or something.. fuck i'm not a manager or a coach.. I'd prefer a brick fucking wall .. is Dunnie still available lol

Spot on, first half they were chasing shadows and shitting it. The dipper fans were flapping and were quiet during the entire first half because I think they were starting to have a bit of self doubt. Had we gone in with a two goal lead, possibly three I think we'd have gone on to win the tie, but we didn't through nothing more than shit officiating.

I can’t see why loads of you are looking at the overall score tonight.

It was over at half time... we played some special football in that first half and had deservingly played ourselves bang into the tie. I think given the week the first half performance was legendary... but once that got ruled offside and the manager sent to the stands... I understand why they knew the tie was over. Given the form of officiating they would need to score a minimum of 4 goals unanswered the second half.

They showed real character... but there is a limit as to where that will get you given decisions.

It all gets a bit deflating I imagine.

I don't think some do to be honest but we have to assume they won't for now. If we don't get 6 points (5 really with the goal difference) from the next three home games we deserve not to win it

Just got back. Nowhere near as bothered as I was on Saturday after the derby. It was always going to be a big ask to rescue something from tonight whereas it should have been straightforward on Saturday and we’d have had the most important trophy in the bag.

Great start but we seemed too hyped up and were making poor decisions with too many pointless or just plain poor balls at key moments. Never seen so many bad balls from Silva & KDB particularly, both of who look physically and mentally shattered. Pep actually got it right tonight tactically but we simply didn’t offer enough of a goal threat after we scored. Just watching the first half again and we’ve exerted loads of pressure but Karius has only had to make one save.

Then in the last 5 minutes there was Bernardo’s deflected shot onto the post and the disallowed goal. I think they may have got that decision right as, if I understand the rule correctly, Milner has to play it deliberately for Sané not to be offside and the question then hinges on whether he did play it deliberately or it just came off him. If the ref decided it wasn’t deliberate then the decision is correct.

Everything changed around 55 minutes when our energy levels seemed to drop, Fernandinho dropped into the back four and we let them have more of the ball. As soon as that happened they scored and it was game over. Otamendi then went full-on Otamendi and that was that. Unlike us, Liverpool know how to protect a lead and deserved it.

Thought Bernardo was excellent (& MOTM for me) and Laporte was also excellent. Sterling was very good but goes over far too easily. He needs to be stronger. Silva, KDB and Fernandinho were very average by their standards. Sané and Walker were OK, Jesus was anonymous after the goal and Otamendi proved he’s the new Richard Dunne.

There’s not enough steel or guile in this team to win the CL unfortunately.

I’m afraid the refeering throughout the season is making me lose the love for the game ironically when we are playing such beautiful football. During the first half you could feel it in the ground that we were overwhelming them, strangling them. 2-0 makes it a completely different game- the referee has made a terrible decision as had the linesman.
Liverpool would not have known whether to stick or twist second half.
There used to be saying that refs tended to favour home sides but not with us- it’s anybody but City.

So frustrated with everything right now.... really hard for me to blame the players for this one. The ref does his job and we go in to halftime 2-0 and its a completely different game. What an absolute farce.

I just don't understand why the ref is constantly and issue. Other sports are not dominated by decisions in the same way, its maddening.

Still no messages saying sorry Tom you was right. Liverpool in this competition would be fucking horrible for us. Absolute mess from top to bottom from our own team to refereeing. Fucking awful week.

Amazing, well done , I bet you’ve got a City coffee cup for work aswell.

Fuck off dickhead...what's your problem with me supporting my team?
Maybe you give up when we go a goal behind but some of us don't.
Can't be arsed with pricks like you so I won't reply again.
