Liverpool pay City £1 million in "spy" settlement for hacking - biggest PL scandal

So why is city's scouting data base even hooked up to be on line, surely that type of info should be kept on a computer that's off line I.e for city's eyes only???

the fact this thread has 18000 views and only 250+ replies suggests the media and reporters are keeping an eye on this subject for info to print

hiyaaaa!!!!

some of you are *****...you know who you are

Well said Corky.

People need to realise on here their views are predominantly read by non-city fans, and people who are paid to spin shit.

As I stated earlier the reporter who broke this story was asked "does it seem to be an independent hacker that later hawked the info, or instigated by the recipient club" and the reply was the latter the implication it was with the approval of the instigating club

City are in the process of making sure any claims they make are watertight and the issue is that no doubt it'll get blamed on some rogue element acting without knowledge of the club but that this defence is used in the corporate and business world and it is no defence

So if the club find out who it is what happens??
Legal action i take it?

It's industrial espionage so yes. There should be some fairly heavy sanctions from the FA/UEFA too, but I won't hold my breath on that one.
Theft of intellectual property for starters. If a club has been complicit by acting on the stolen information then that would be a further crime akin to receiving.

Not unless it was written in the former scouts contracts that they weren't allowed to use the same scout 7 passwords that they used when working for the club. Infact, this is more embarrassing for the club's IT security, or complete lack of. When an employee leaves any company you take their phone, laptop, swipe cards and then cancel any passwords or logins for company websites. It's a fairly standard checklist that a 19 year old HR girl would complete after the exit interview.

The fact that these scouts joined Liverpool, but could still log in using their City accounts is ridiculous when you consider the millions of pounds at stake. There will be a record of them still logging in, but it would be impossible to prove that any of the info was actually shared.

Agreed, but a definitive link back to a club will open the door to all kinds of goodies, including maybe conspiracy charges. If it can be demonstrated that a club received any of the hacked data, then that club will be very nervous, and with good reason. FA and UEFA penalties, criminal prosecution and civil litigation...

It could be fun couldn't it and the thing is City know which club is involved they are just making sure they can prove it in a court of law

Couple of things stand out for me.

I used to contract for a financial institution quite a while ago and some people were called into a meeting. Pretty well as soon as they were in the meeting, a list came out and we had to disable their accounts. They all came out and were escorted to their desks by Security and were only allowed to pick up personal items and were then escorted from site.

The other one is that back in 2007, McLaren were passed information about the Ferrari team by a former employee and the upshot was that the team were excluded from that season's championship and had a $100m fine imposed.

While it would be harsh, it shows that there is a precedent for what amounts to industrial espionage.

For anyone interested in the link:

Yep- my brother and I were talking about the McLaren spying on Ferrari incident yesterday. $100m is a huge fine- there is a lot of money in F1- but, to be fair, there is a lot of money in football too.

I'm not a scout, and nor do I know the inner workings of any football team, so without guessing, I have no idea how damaging incidents like this actually are. But it is fundamentally wrong, so there should be a punishment to match.
