I do wonder how all those Liverpool fans who were pontificating about 'slowly growing your club organically by bringing your own talent through' when talking unfavourably about City last season, feel about their new signings from Southampton.

Theyre English so its ok. Fact that they're being linked with every player that's has had a half decent WC seems to be ok too. Mentioned this earlier on in the thread,it was Rodgers who said "we aren't a club who spend, but instead bring our players through the ranks. He said it on Football Focus and the two players they showed when saying it? Sturridge and Henderson.
I fully take your point about Liverpool, but my point was about Southampton. By flashing their money and talking these players Liverpool have directly prevented Southampton achieving success the way that Liverpool fans stated, to the point of utter tedium, was 'the right way' to do it.

They will, of course, give little thought to that.

Apologies, didn't read it like that. See your point on that now though. I read on another forum how disgusting it was that City flashed their cash at Villa and Everton when buying players such as Lescott,Milner and Barry which prevented the teams from competing in Europe apparently. Mercenaries obviously too, just going for the money .

No need to apologise. What I wrote could have been read either way.

Losing Suarez will be tough, but sometimes losing superstars works fine (Ronaldo for United). Obviously I'll choose to be optimistic, whereas you lot understandably can't wait for it to go tits up!
In what way did that work out well for them? They lost their title the season after he left, and went from being one of the best teams in Europe to not looking like serious contenders since then. You don't notice it as much domestically, of course, because it doesn't take the best players in the world to beat Fulham or West Ham, but against top opposition, they became way worse after Ronaldo left. And that was despite still having several other world class players in their prime at the time (Rooney scored 34 goals the next season).

It's all smoke and mirrors and the press writing things differently for their favoured clubs. There are people out there who believe Jones and Smalling were brought through as kids in the United academy, the same way they think Sturridge,Sterling and Henderson are all good English kids spotted booting a ball against the kop wall and snapped up by Liverpool instead of them buying them for millions.

Liverpool raiding Southampton for their best players just proves,as if we didn't already know, that those with money succeed and those without don't and the myth of a smaller club being able to find and nurture their own talent and compete is utter bollocks and has been since probably Cloughie last did it at Forest.

Can anybody tell me roughly what the story is with Liverpool and their finances?

How much did they lose over the past couple of years, was it £40M?
Wasn't there something about the owner having loaned them money that he'll now have to take as shares due to ffp?
They should have done much better financially in the last 12months with extra money from the league and the increased TV money etc, but are they likely to have broken even (or even made a profit)?

Just trying to get an idea of how tight it's going to be for them over this season and into next so I can gauge things like how screwed they might be if they don't make top 4 next season/whether the Suarez money will clear the debt etc, etc. Any enlightening responses appreciated.

Spot on, mate. What is especially galling about Liverpool fans' attitude to this, is the fact their club, as much as any other, created that landscape in the modern game, where money inevitably begets money and becomes increasingly concentrated at the top.

Their lack of knowledge about their club's 'istree in that regard is pathetic. Either that or they're utter hypocrites.

Exactly! They were also instrumental in creating the champions league by threatening to breakaway from the premier league along with that other club who ''Do it the right way'' Arsenal and the rags of course.

I love the fact we have given these hypocrites a bloody nose and unfortunately for them we got through the door in the nick of time before they slammed it shut and we are going nowhere fast.
