Liverpool thread 2018/19

Blues are showing far too much schadenfreude above. It's not over till it's over.
Liverpool have the slightly easier title run-in. Our league season probably depends on a run of four games:
- Crystal Palace (A)
- Tottenham Hotspur (H)
- Manchester United (A)
- Burnley (A)

3 of the above teams took points off us last season!

It’s no way near over, but yesterday was a if result for City. Could do with Liverpool dropping points in two more games I think to make us a bit more comfortable.

Pretty sure they chased down and won a couple way back in the early-mid 80's when Rush was playing for them but it's completely irrelevant to the present day as it's not like they have any of the same players or management as they had back then. Pointless comment really
Entirely different ballgame now as well, with the goalie backpass rule and 3pts for a win.
With 1, it means its less boring and monotonous (Liverpool in the 70's and 80's)
With 2, it means positions can change rapidly (as per this month), and a draw is... not so welcome (also as per this month).

I don't think there's a single Blue who thinks it's done and dusted, not one. As supporters we've been through the grinder on numerous occasions, sunk to the murky depths of lower league status, and yet we stayed loyal to the club we love. We are grounded in reality, so whilst being one point ahead at the beginning of March is nice, the marathon isn't over yet - there's many a slip 'tween cup and lip.

What will be interesting is seeing how the dippers handle the intense pressure of the run-in. We are both going to be under the microscope for the remainder of the season, every misplaced pass, every shot at goal, every free kick from now on, each one could possibly have devastating consequences for the eventual losers. So for me it may come down to the mentality of our respective managers. Klopp has neither the mental strength or the footballing nous to see it through, as we've all recently witnessed. There have been tell-tale signs that he's becoming dangerously unhinged - for a second yesterday I honestly thought he was going to thump the kid who was clapping him. It would not have come as any great surprise if he had. He's got that haunted look of increasing self-doubt that he tries to hide with a cheery grin and media-friendly quip, but beneath it is a man who is struggling, a man on the edge. Reminds me very much of Peg in his final weeks at the swamp.
Whereas Pep on the other hand, is calmness personified. He is strong and confident, a natural leader, as opposed to someone who has had leadership thrust upon him.

No, the title is not a foregone conclusion (Ricky Gervais pun intended), but I know who my money is on come end of season.

Bit of a debate at work this morning. Lfc fan said they had never been 10pts clear this season. Only 7 is this correct ? Or were they 10pts clear with a game in hand after they beat Arsenal? Cheers

Think it’s a case of seeing the situation when both teams had played the same number of games. I seem to recall them being 7 ahead with the opportunity to go to 10 but that never materialised. Could be wrong, of course.

It'ts how they respond to the draw with Everton that matters. We lost to Newcastle and then went on a roll...

Not only did we go top at Christmas in '81, but we beat them at Anfield to do so; something that's only happened once since (as I'm sure you're well aware!).

Don't remember that about 85/86, although now you mention it I recall they won the league on the last day at Stamford Bridge when Daglish (who was player manager) scored the winner, so it must have been tight, I guess.

Yep, we won 3-1 at Anfield and I think beat Wolves at home a couple of days later which saw us go top

Just had a look at the 85-86 season. Everton were 8 points clear of Liverpool at the end of February but I'm not sure whether they'd played the same number of games at that point. United were 3 behind Everton with a game in hand. Liverpool only seized control of the title race when Everton lost 1-0 at Oxford at the end of April. That left Liverpool 4 points clear of West Ham (think it's often forgotten how great a season they had!) and 5 clear of Everton with a game to play, whereas West Ham and Everton had 2 games left.

West Ham had a decent team around that time.

This is because we played later than thm for that match-weekend

So only ever 7pts clear at the end of the match weekend

That's never been taken into account before when looking at the biggest gap, such as when talking about Newcastle being 12 points clear. Why should it be now?

Zero chickens have been counted, but after 3 months of them wanking themselves silly over being champions elect, it's great to see them below us with the same number of games played.

The way they gloat & bullshit is unique imo. The rags can get pretty giddy but Liverpool are out on their own.

And now they are ONE POINT behind they are whining & sulking about it & spitting their dummies out.

We are chasing 3 competitions & it would be an absolute miracle if that didn't lead to us dropping points in one or two league games.

But we will fight for the title, not chuck it in.
