Kompany didn't play much in the first half of last season and we did pretty well. He barely played during our run of 18 consecutive wins in 17/18 when Otamendi was our best defender. Laporte is our best defender after Kompany's retirement anyway and widely recognised as one of the best left-footed CBs in the world, so the analogy with VVD is perfectly valid.

Laporte played 35 league games. Not much of a surprise that he played in all the defeats.

I totally agree with you as far technical ability is concerned. But we can't underestimate Vinny's other more "intangible" qualities. On-field leadership is something we've sorely missed this season. Kevin has been by far our most vocal player in recent games. Silva, Fernandino are way too "nice" for my liking. I think Laporte may be too. If you watch Liverpool, most of their defensive work is done by their front 6. VVD doesn't really do that much defending. What he does is to mop up any thing that bypasses their midfield but spends most of the time marshalling the other defensive players while Henderson looks after the rest of their players. Kompany, very much like John Terry, was a proper general and his influence on the field made sure that everyone stuck to their tasks from the first to the last whistle.

Not sure what your point is: that we haven't been seriously hurt by Laporte's long absence or that Liverpool wouldn't miss VVD so much? Can't agree on both counts. With VVD they didn't keep a clean sheet in 12 consecutive league games. Imagine Liverpool without him: apart from him being world class, their confidence will drop and the confidence of the opposition will increase. There isn't really much to debate imo.

Yeah, they are all talking up the points total too.

If they do lose a few games towards the end of the season and don't now beat our points record after all the hype, it will be a lovely finish to the season regardless of their tainted title win.

It's pretty easy to know what Klopp will do - he's done it every season worth Liverpool and did it every season with Dortmund.

This year he will give Minamino, Jones and Elliot time to build for next season. He will play Shaq, Clyne (if he gets back) , Lovren and origi (possibly) to sell. And he will try to rotate people in to the lb/rb position to see if they're is a backup in the current squad.

Oh dear. I can see dropped points on the horizon.
Can you imagine the meltdown if they suddenly lost a few games and somehow we closed the gap to 6 points with us to play them?

I just had this overwhelming feeling of them celebrating way too soon, even we didn't start singing we're going to win the league in February and we was way ahead then.

But them singing they're gonna win the league in January....oh dear.
Don't forget they have istreee for this.

If the Blades win today, Liverpool would have to do something they haven’t yet done this season (lose) to make that game at the Etihad continue to be relevant. After the trip to Wolves on Thursday, the fixture list gets a lot easier for the next two months, which is surely another part of the Worldwide Scouse Conspiracy so many here seem to buy into.

It’s a distinct possibility we’ll be celebrating winning the league properly, at Anfield, after beating Palace two weeks before playing at City. If all of this were to come off, Klopp could very well choose to run out the kids against you lot, particularly if the Quadruple is still on by then.
Quadruple?

Imagine if we win both domestic cups and the champions league? A double a treble and a treble over 3 years will dwarf you winning the league ably assisted by the PIGMOl guys and Stockley Park. You’ll have had your best season since last year and still achieved less than us. Not saying it will happen but it’s as possible as your Quadruple. Be even sweeter if we beat you in all 3 finals
As the Spartan might reply " IF "
