I love the perceived digs at us that United are their true rivals.
They must have a lot of younger lads posting on there as, as any Liverpool fan older than about 30 will tell you - as one told me - until Ferguson won the FA cup in 1990 there was NO heightened rivalry with United beyond the usual and historic geographical rivalry.
Until then it was a rivalry no bigger or smaller than the rivalry most clubs have amongst themselves: City/United and Leeds, Liverpool and Arsenal, etc.
This “el Plastico” self-styled ‘biggest rivalry in football’ was manufactured in the 90s in order to appeal to the new breed of football spectator who got most of their opinions from the newly formed Sky monopoly (as it was then). It was good for business and actively encouraged by both clubs and broadcasters/media. It was, and basically still is, a brilliant money spinner for them, making millions off brain dead fashion victims.
My best mate is a united fan (sorry but we’ve been mates for nearly 50 years) and he told me this was bollocks And maintained it “goes back to before we were born”. He maintained this stance until I showed him a YouTube clip of united fans singing YNWA at a game at old Trafford in the 80s and asked him to explain it.
It is a made up fierce rivalry instigated by Ferguson in order to curry favour with the Stretford end and buy him some much needed time at the beginning of his tenure at the meccano stadium.
