Sorry, but I never behaved as scum, I was not a hooligan, and even back then could not fight my way out of a wet paper bag. I never, ever went looking for trouble. I just went to watch the football. Yet I have vivid memories of being pushed around (physically) by bullying coppers, of being herded like sheep and of being spoken to like I was the shit on their shoes. We were all lumped together, because some of us were apt to kick off. I just accepted being treated like dirt, but some lads responded more boldly and got into trouble.

It may have been different, of course, if you rocked up in a three-piece suit and went into the main stand or the directors' box after parking your Bentley, but that was my experience.

I used to watch from the kippax then have to get to princess parkway for the bus so would walk past the north stand, something the coppers couldn’t fathom. Just for walking in that direction seemed to warrant being twatted on the head from a Copper on a horse.

I am sorry but along with lots of other fake news 'all football fans were treated like scum' is now an accepted 'fact'. Decent fans were treated like decent people but I remember running battles in the Kippax when many away fans tried to 'take' the Kippax. The photo of the blue with a dart in his head at the swamp. There were very serious assaults and even murders committed by hooligans, Europe was plagued by feral mobs of English fans, mainly it has to be said Liverpool fans, looting and fighting their way to a match and doing the same on the return journey. Motorway services were scenes of constant battles, our Rag neighbours were both sinners and sinned against, again mainly by the dippers. I was there throughout it. I took my 7 year old step son to City v Leeds, I took him in the Platt Lane thinking it would be safe, it is the only match I have ever left early. I Left due to the constant battles. Pitch invasions in an attempt to attack the other away supporters were a regular occurrence and the reason why fences went up. Yes Hillsborough proved they were deadly and therefore wrong but at the time it was thought to be the answer.
I am off to Porto now so wont be able to reply to anything but I am glad those violent and frightening days are long behind us.
So true and share your feelings that those days are long behind us.
I think my first recollection of trouble at football was from seeing reports on "Nationwide" long long ago...even then I used to like watching it for some reason thinking Sue Lawley was "very pretty"...but recall seeing Rag supporters tearing up Carrow Road (I think)...It may even have later been part of their credits.
That said, I think many police tarred fans "en masse" with the same brush. but if you went low key and quiet you could be treated decently.

And on to happier events....
Enjoy your trip to Portugal and with my North West roots...
GOOD LUCK CITY

Blame every single twat who got involved in hooliganism in the 70's & 80's.

It's the actions of these wankers that led to fans being fenced in and heavy-handed treatment from the police.

To make things worse, I've seen them feinted and almost hero-worshipped on here (and other football forums) by some fans. Some of them have even made money from documentaries and books about their actions back then.

Scum, the lot of them.

Before hooligans even came into the game the authorities couldn’t care less about the crowds you look back at the capacity of some grounds in the 40s50s and 60s and how they managed to fit so many people into some of them grounds .......... look at the Burnden Park tragedy 85k into the ground probably about 45k over the safety limit but they could give a toss ......... sadly it took tragedies during the 80s for football to get its act together

I was just reading about this and the Ibrox disaster, which overtook it as the worst British stadium disaster. Apparently Kenny Dalglish was at Ibrox, Heysel and Hillsborough.

I have a theory about this, maybe it's wild, but in the 1950s virtually every bloke had been in the Army and many had fought in wars. They exercised a lot of self-restraint and self-discipline, and so even the grottiest dump was relatively safe, unless a wall collapsed.

Subsequent generations were more 'free' shall we say, so that self-discipline gradually broke down. And football became an accident waiting to happen. Even when I think back to Maine Road, it was scary at times when there was a big crowd. You could be lifted off your feet in the crush at full-time. From there it's but a slip to being crushed underfoot. A lot was down to luck, not good management.

Mate. Seriously. The judiciary in this country have been complicit in many, many fuck ups and cover ups. Don't think they're not political animals themselves.

The Scousers have been done over here. As much as many dislike them on here, in this instance they definitely are the victims.
Absolutely they are. More vexing than what the police actually did (Fucked up then tried their damndest to blame the dead) is these people/opposition fans actually defending the police and powers that be. What the actual!

I hate lfc, I hate everything about them, but I hate corrupt police and judges and govns more, especially when it is against us.
