Liz Truss

Spare a thought for Harry Cole at the Sun who has this racy little stocking filler out for publication on Dec 8.

‘It’s like Weetabix with warm milk on it’

I suspect he’s not that bothered.

If the US is anything to go by, the entire political non-fiction genre exists for money laundering and bribes.

Someone who wants a few headlines from Harry Cole will buy 10,000 copies and they’ll sit in a warehouse for a few years before being shredded.

Of course it's a constitutional issue, but we don't have a constitution. Unprecedented times, and not been done for a hundred years (George V and Baldwin), but it would not be unconstitutional for Charles to appoint someone with some hope of unifying the Tories rather than Truss's idiotic choice.

The monarch is the custodian of our unwritten constitution. Though not codified, the UK's constitution is written in hundreds of Acts of Parliament, court cases, and in documented conventions. Its essential principles are Parliamentary sovereignty, the rule of law, democracy and so on.

Right now the Conservatives have a healthy Parliamentary majority and don't need to go the polls for another two years. Larry the Downing Street cat could be PM if the governing party wished it so and Charlie boy would have no say in the matter.

I believe Truss is finished, but the mechanics of her downfall will only emerge once the political arm wrestling between the various factions in the Conservative Parliamentary Party ends. Once that's resolved, a mechanism will be set up to remove her and replace her.

When Johnson was ousted it wasn't a constitutional crisis and removing Truss won't be either, they'll just have to tear up the Tory rule book for this one but that's no business of Charlie boy.

Perhaps the most depressing thing is that this is someone who has now served continuously in Government for ten years. That her failings are only appreciated once she rises to the top says as much about British politics and public scrutiny as it does about her.
It is the most depressing thing, by far. And the most concerning too.

Her lack of talent, intellect and even political acumen will have been obvious to insiders, but she’s still ended up as PM, passing through as Foreign Secretary on the way. Cliques and fractures across the Conservative Party helped into the cabinet, and once she got there the constant flux around government appears to have prevented any genuine appraisal of her abilities. In a more stable environment her shortcomings would have become obvious, and a competent PM would surely have fired her, but none of that has occurred.

This is the person who, as a country, we’ve been happy to send around the world dealing with the most delicate diplomatic issues. She’s been the face of the country at major political summits, yet collectively as a nation we’ve waited until she was PM - and in a position to do genuine harm - to question her ability and suitability for high office.

a disaster , was always going to be .
she needs to be gone , even if that means a Labour government .
it's a tragedy i've had to say that .
Fuck me Bill when even you diss the Tories you know they are fucked.
