Long weekend in Istanbul at end of May - Turkey on Govt Red List

I hope it stays in Istanbul and I hope it’s ok to go on non-official trips as long as you quarantine upon return. Only out of pure selfish reasons as I have a flight booked and paid for carried over from last time and have just booked a cheap hotel! The only downside is we’ll all miss the parade when we get back! ;)

This is from someone I know who lives in Istanbul. The 'friends' she references are mates of my wife who also live there. Honestly, I'm still tempted to go but it doesn't seem very sensible.

Down to 22,388 cases in Turkey today. 3 weeks ago it was 63k.

A reminder that they need to get it to 14k or below for it to have a chance of turning green on the UK traffic light system.

I think that there may be a bit of statistical manipulation here on the part of the Turkish government.

Perhaps. Remains to be seen whether the UK accept them as fact, but fundamentally they are getting towards the target.

Either I did my maths wrong or the population figure I used initially was wrong, but the target is a little over 12k cases per day.

According to Simon Calder, the travel expert:

'Green status is about highs and lows.

These should be as low as possible: coronavirus infection rates; “variants of concern”; and passengers connecting through key hubs.

And these should be as high as possible: vaccine roll-out; reliability of data; genomic sequencing capability.'

With all of the above in mind, I just can't see how Istanbul makes the green list in just three weeks' time (in reality two if people are to have chance to make late arrangements).

It's likely midnight tonight/tomorrow when the traffic light list is revealed.

Whichever colour Turkey falls under initially (and it's about a 99% certainty it will be amber at best) is what the rules and regs will be for the final.

By all accounts it's going to be reviewed every 2 weeks once travel goes live again from 17th, so if Turkey is amber tonight/tomorrow, it will be amber until at least Monday 31st May.

I think there is more chance of me waking up with Taylor Swift than the government giving travelling fans an exemption from any rules, even those on official club trips, so I wouldn't pin any hopes on a 'travel bubble' being authorised.

If Greece were to get green status and anyone thinking of holidaying there and travelling over to Istanbul for the final and back again, bear in mind you'd still be subject to amber restrictions on return to the UK. The only way round this would be to spend the 10 days after Istanbul in another green country (be that Greece or elsewhere)

Don’t worry about the glazers, I’ve come to save you
