Looks like it was all lies about Thaksin Shinawatra

my mate married a thai bird and she thinks the sun shines out of Thaksins ar*e, apparently after the sunami he made sure all the poor were properly looked after and they have never forgotten him for it!
Is she called Kiam by any chance ;o)

I'm amazed the level of negative posts towards Thaksin here, is he a crook, without doubt, but I'm sure that pretty much anyone in politics in that part of the world is. Democracy in Southeast Asia is not a shining example of it in any of its forms. As for Thaksin at City he saved the club, remember we had lost our top scorer from the year before in Sir Joey and had no manager when the players that remained returned from the off season(tell me that doesn't look fucked up)and his short term investment helped us to a top 10 finish(as a fan of over 30 years something I haven't seen often). Without that bridge, it's clear we would have been a much less attractive option to our current owners, and if we had gone down it is doubtful they would have taken us on and that would have given us a major problem. I liken it to some guy running onto the flight deck of a plane after the pilot has a heart attack and before the copilot comes back from the toilet, he saves the plane from crashing and then his fellow passengers complain about their spilt drinks! Without the good doctor and SGE we would have been fucked last year and anyone that thinks diffrantly needs to take a close look at what was going on.

You are taking the mick mate, he is answerable for shooting many drug dealers? Our leaders send our armies all over the world killing tens of thousands each year!!!

And also you think he bought City to make money, we were on our arse at the time so how could he foresee a profit?

I agree he helped us by selling to the Arabs but he was forced to do so.

No mate I'm giving you the facts. If you're struggling to get the point then you need to concentrate.

I used quotes when I wrote 'drug dealers' and went onto explain they were political opponents.
He was pretending they were drug dealers and using that as an excuse to remove them permanently, is that clear enough?

I never made a comparison between TS and Bush / Blair. Really not sure what your point is here.

'How could he foresee a profit?'

I don't know I'm not a rich business man, neither are you I suspect, the fact remains he did make a profit - a very tidy one - which makes him a clever, shrewd and lucky man.

I'm no fan of his at all (as I said) but looking at the facts does bring some perspective.

I couldn't give a fuck about Thai politics.

What bothered me was that the slimy little fucker used our club purely and simply in the hope of his own political gain, once Manchester City had served its purpose of keeping him in the spotlight during the Thai elections he pulled the financial plug. If it wasn't for the carrot of a healthy profit from the sale of the club I firmly beleive he'd have cut his losses and wound the club up without a second thought.
Thankfully the episode is now a chapter in City's colourful history, but I'd steer clear of comments like that.

The new owners are well connected to Thaksin, and are their motives any better? Politically I despise them - far worse than Thaksin. But as a City fan, it was a great day for the club when they took over

For 12 months MCFC became some kind of religious object which had somehow become tainted through its association with the evil Dr. This argument is now forgotten now. Thankfully because it was never relevant in the 1st place, but it does annoy me how some people can so easily pick up and drop political ideals as and when it suits them

Thaksin was mentioned as having 'questions to answer' by the UNHCR after the shooting of many 'drug dealers' who just happened to also be student activists and supporters of an independent southern, muslim, state. IIRC the figures were 2.000 suspicious deaths in 3 months. This is no trifling matter and the UNHCR is way above local political influence.

Mr Bluecore, or more correctly mr fullofshitcore.

You obviously know nothing about Thailand or Thai politics. The fact is the 'Drug dealers' and the 'Southern Muslims' are two totally separate issues. Maybe you should provide some of the quotes you supposedly used.

The real picture is that Thaksin is a corrupt lying politician who bullshitted his way into office He then went on to be the most corrupt Prime Minister in the history of Thailand, most of his family are shits especially his wife.

But he became popular with Thai people. Why? at the time Thailand was being ravaged by by a huge problem of drug trafficking. Thailand was the hub of the regional drugs trade, and many young Thais were getting lured in, especially getting hooked to Methamphetamine (yah baa). But when the dealers got to court they either dissappeared or through bribery or influence would never get charged. It was getting out of hand, so Thaksin ordered the crackdown. Many of the dealers and their henchmen and their lowly runners died in gunfights, some real and some staged, innocent bystanders sometimes died as a result. But this proved very popular with the Thai public as the drug trade shrank. The vast majority of the Thai public were happy that their neighbourhoods had become safe again.

As to the Muslims in the South, it was only the four most Southern provinces that were involved. As in most places in the world, there was a rise in Islamic militancy. Some believed that Malaysia was involved. But to cut a long story short 95% of the Thai population were happy to see the country 'fight back' against Islamic militancy.

In both situations Thaksin cleverly manipulated the Thai public and wooed them to his side. Unfortunately the Military, who are as corrupt as Thaksin, possibly even more so, were not happy.

Thaksin was good for City, but he is a skillful politican and a total scumbag, I hope he never comes to city again.

Right now Thailand is in crisis, with the current Prime Minister saying he will not bow to demonstrators, when he got in power himself because of demonstrators. Could be very bloody.

I was being polite, slimy little **** would be more accurate.

Watched the BBC news, big crowds of is supporters out on the streets in Bangkok talking about revolution

Needs to overthrow the monarchy. If his supporters do that, then they will really have achieved something

Thaksin bought us when we had nothing but debt and a poor squad, injected the cash he had available until his assets were frozen and made sure, through business contacts, that our present owners took us on.

If we look at the cash spent on players in the two seasons before him and compare with money spent in the last two seasons and what is likely to be spent in the future, who can say that he has harmed us?
