Lost My Job

Times like this I'm glad I'm the one doing the IT-stuff!

Tough break though, I feel for you, transfer window undoubtedly affected my work, if I'm honest.

another word of caution. Be very carefull about sending and rxing personnel emails and then forwarding them on to work mates.

Im an IT administrator and one part of my job is to monitor employees internet usage.

So yes, be careful, i feel for the OP. They have a log of every visit to every site and at what times of the day. Also be careful if you use MSN Messenger as conversations are logged too and they can see every word you type.

One good idea may be to get buddyish with an IT guy at your workplace....few people at my place I have a quiet word with if their usage gets to the point where management will notice it.

Agree with the other posters that if there were no prior warnings or internet usage policy then you should definately appeal.

Could you say you go on it first thing and leave it open to have a look at lunch or can they tell every refresh?

They can tell every refresh, every refresh is a hit...its not logged on websites visited, its logged on visits to any website, there is a difference.

Also if your going to minimize things (i strongly advise you dont) also be careful with page advertisements, they can contact websites to refresh themselves and continue looping the advertisement, which will appear on your logs that you have visited a website, every time that advert loops.

You only need this forum on transfer windows, anything from any site is posted on here in seconds of it appearing, so add the "view active topics" page to your favourites. Open it, quick check at the top stories, then close it. do that periodically and your logs shouldnt be too bad. Unless we sign Kaka, then we're all in the shit.

My ex got done by her employer (a major sportswear company) for email usage and, more specifically the content of said emails. Two of her colleagues complained that their workload was too much for them (because they were fucking thick) so the company checked up on what they were actually spending their time doing, internet and email usage etc. They came across some emails those two had sent to each other, and my ex had joined in, where they were slagging off the company and talking about how they couldn't wait to get out of there etc. All three of them were disciplined, the other two were sacked, my ex was given a payoff and told to leave (or they'd sack her as well). Companies will try and find any way they can to get rif od people they don't think fit their 'ethos'. It was the second time the ex had been paid off to leave an employer though, so there was probably an element of her being generally a shit employee thrown in there!

Alt + F4 is the short cut to 'close current window' on IE. It was my first paranoid action upon reading this thread.

You really ought to get some advice on this mate. Sounds like you've been harshly done by...

I had to dismiss somebody at the request of my HR Dept at my last company. IT did random checks on different teams and it showed that one member of staff was using a well known internet auction site. The lad was selling mucky vids he had brought back from Amsterdam. He was also using his hotmail account. He was a good worker but it was totally against company IT policy.

At the same time a lad was looking at football web sites and some had the pop-ups for ladbrokes etc. They wanted to dismiss him as well. He fought his corner and said that he did not enter the betting web sites. Took his union rep in with him at the appeal and won.

Agree with somebody about seeing a solicitor. First meeting up to say half an hour is free. Take your contract of employment with you. Unless they indicate what unreasonable use is then they would have a hard time convincing a tribunal (if it got that far), especialy if your disciplinary record was clear previously and you were up to date with your work. Dig out all your old appraisal notes etc as well.

I lost my job yesterday, was sacked for using the internet during the transfew window. Had a disciplinary yesterday and got dismissed from it after 2 weeks of investigations.

So i was wondering if anyone knew of any good job sites for me to look through so i can get myself straight back in work...hopefully.

Thanks all.

Unlucky fella, the transfer window has a lot to answer for!
