What happened to this thread? It used to exist in these parts.
Anyway, it seems that we are persistent and confident it can happen. Presumably, we believe there is a high chance he will be cleared by then because otherwise, he would surely not be a part of our plans.

Having watched him a fair few times since we have been courting him, I’m just not sure about him.

He definitely has some flair snd skill to him, and he’s not a small lad, but I just wonder if he’s the worker we need in midfield.

He’s very creative, but he does give the ball away a fair amount and he’s not always shown himself to be the fighter and chaser we need in midfield when we turn it over.

At the prices quoted, I’m a tad nervous of plunking down that much cash.

I agree. Tidy at times but doesn’t look elite.

Kovacic is a player Pep's liked for a long time. He missed out on him twice previously, so he jumped at the opportunity last summer.

As a Squad player, I've no issues with him, but we've become spoiled having top specialist operators as our main starters. Having lost Mahrez & Gundog, & with KDB & Grealish being out for extended periods, it was a big hit even for City.

Albeit we've got Kev & Jack back, we're still missing replacements for Mahrez & Gundog, & it's seriously affected the over all quality of our starting eleven & first choice substitutes.

There's a huge difference between being able to call upon Mahrez & Gundog, as opposed to Kovacic & Nunes, hence this season's struggles.

To illustrate this, ArseAnal have beaten us twice this season & drawn against us once, after years of being nowhere near.
Palmer was the perfect replacement for Mahrez.

Paqueta looks good. The kind of player man united buys to try and catch us but then can’t.

It’s kind of worrying we aren’t linked with anybody truly exceptional except for Wirtz.

Exactly considering we are the best team in the world

Palmer didn't live up to expectations last season when given numerous chances to impress. Pep wanted him to stay & improve but Palmer had faith in his own ability & wanted to go out on loan to prove himself.

In the end he was given a choice & decided to leave which has worked out for him so far. In my mind, we win some, we lose some, but as we saw last season, Palmer was miles behind the quality of Mahrez, Silva & Foden.

This is the level of competition Palmer was up against at City, which he isn't with the Chavs, so it's difficult to compare his form this season to his last with us.

Would Palmer be starting ahead of Phil or Bernardo this season? I'm not so sure, hence the patience he was being asked for, but which he didn't want to wait to prove himself here.

As for Paqueta, I see a fantastic player in a workmanlike team, where I feel he'd flourish more if surrounded by better players, in a more clearly defined role.

I'm sure every top team in Europe has designs on Wirtz. The smart money would be on him remaining at Leverkusen for next season & being gobbled up by the German Rags the season after.

1) Palmer has looked good in a bang average, undisciplined team, that gives the ball away with frequency. That is not this.

2) If he wasn’t taking penalties, he would have been fairly anonymous this season.

3) He doesn’t show nearly the defensive qualities needed to be a starter at City given the quality of those that do start and put in a TWO-WAY shift.

4) Good luck to him in the big smoke!

All for bringing him on board, assuming the allegations are unfounded, though if he is Gundogan’s replacement, it begs why we bought Kovacic. After all, he was landed long before the clouds gathered over Paqueta.
Felt like a change of strategy to me, to cope with more teams going man to man. Kovacic, Nunes and Doku can all beat a player if one on one.

He would have made much more of an impact than Nunes, however I do wonder where he would have played and how would that impact the likes of Phil, Bernie, Julian and Bobb.

It wouldn't have impacted those more attacking players game time at all he'd be largely playing alongside them and Rodri to add balance, he'd be slightly to the left of Rodri acting as a link up player between him and our more attacking/creative players with one two or one touch passes, somebody able to quickly join those attacks not afraid to make forward passes and sees openings just the way silky Ilkay did.

Pep played Palmer mostly on the left wing, he barely got the chance to play on the right with Mahre, Bernardo and Foden being favoured, which you can’t really dispute. Shit happens, he didn’t get a proper chance to prove himself in his best position but we won the treble.
