We would have signed him last summer, aged 25, had it not been for the allegations. We might even have gone for him from Lyon the summer before, when he was 24 and the same age as Silva when he joined, but somehow we were convinced Phillips was better. It’s not always the fault of the player.
Surely some other team would had signed him if not us if he was really a world beater.

Are you saying we can't have a squad of British players? If so, what's the British player limit?
You can be for registration purposes, only 4 go on the Nation trained, 4 go on the club trained and 17 are classed as NONHG (Grealish is on this list as well at the minute)

(PL rules are a bit more lax but we arent signing anyone and telling them they cant play CL)

Given the financial might of the premier league and the access all clubs have to the same extensive data analytics in 2024 there's every chance they might be.
But is he as good as the other 3. Is he even as good as Mata? We should only be acquiring players who are top 20-30 in the world. Does Paqueta fall in that category?

So if we're up to 16 of the 17 NONHG quota, going British & retaining a bit of NONHG headroom makes sense, hence the English premium on players.

We didn't buy Philips for the HG purpose, but getting him left us with a bit of NONHG headroom. Unfortunately for City & the player, it hasn't worked out. You win some, you lose some.

My hope is that Leeds & Leicester get promoted, & Leeds bring Kalvin home for £20m-£30m & end his two year nightmare.

Hopefully, City will bring in a serious CDM replacement for him in the guise of Guimarães or Neves as rumoured.

Not all teams have £50+ million to spend on players and not all players are necessarily compatible with our system. His style of play has seen him become a mainstay of the Brazilian national side, and with us he’ll be surrounded with better players than at West Ham United.

It’s going to be interesting to see how Lavia recovers at Chelsea. He left us for Southampton two days after we signed Phillips.

Nope, he took a NONHG spot. Its Pep small squad that leaves us with headroom

It's evident now we'd have been better off keeping Lavia & forgoing Philips, however none of us are Mystic Meg & could've envisaged how either player's immediate futures would've panned out.

Looking at it pragmatically, the smart money would've been on backing Philips to be a success, with Lavia needing time to develop. Shit happens, innit?
